Viewing Boxing from Ringside
I now see Boxing history through a whole new lens. Boxing legends came alive before my eyes and I understood finally what brought them to the levels they attained. Listening to my parents talk about Joe Louis and remembering Cassius Clay/Ali from my own early adult years enhanced the information gleaned from these pages. New names were dangled before me and now I want to know more about them. Where was I when they fought for glory? What kind of lives did they lead? Economics 101 and Other Thoughts
It's easy to see that Tom Donelson loves to learn. His chief interests are political science and economics. But he also delves into biography, boxing and rock ‘n’ roll. Sometimes, he mixes what he gleans from different disciplines to support certain central ideas: Freedom is good. Free markets are good. People can prosper if government stays out of their way. So here it is, as Donelson says, a synopsis of his thoughts, some of which have been offered in publications ranging from an alternative paper in Kansas City, to daily newspapers (including The Gazette, of Cedar Rapids and Iowa City, for which I work on the opinion page), to the National Review. Fight Sports and American Masculinity
Throughout America's past, some men have feared the descent of their gender into effeminacy, and turned their eyes to the ring in hopes of salvation. This work explains how the dominant fight sports in the United States have changed over time in response to broad shifts in American culture and ideals of manhood, and presents a narrative of American history as seen from the bars, gyms, stadiums and living rooms of the heartland. Ordinary Americans were the agents who supported and participated in fight sports and determined its vision of masculinity. This work counters the economic determinism prevalent in studies of American fight sports, which overemphasize profit as the driving force in the popularization of these sports. The author also disputes previous scholarship's domestic focus, with an appreciation of how American fight sports are connected to the rest of the world.
