When 21 shots from a semi-automatic pistol rang out across the Alpine woodland high above Lake Annecy, there was nobody nearby to raise the alarm. In a car, in a lay-by off the single-land track above, were the bloodied bodies of British computer engineer, Saad al-Hilli, his dentist wife, Iqbal, and her mother, Suhaila. Nearby, on the road, lay the corpse of French cyclist, Sylvain Mollier, punctured by seven shots from the same gun. Saad's eldest daughter, Zainab, seven, had been shot, pistol-whipped and left for dead. Cowering underneath her mum Iqbal's skirt in the back seat of the car was Zainab's little sister Zeena - the only one of the six people there left unharmed. Was this a professional assassin's error, or a humane gesture by someone who knew the girls? Two years on from this most implausible crime, French police remain baffled. This book explores the background of the case.

Yn "e;Cofnodion"e; mae Meic Stephens yn edrych yn ol ar ei fywyd fel llenor, golygydd, swyddog Cyngor y Celfyddydau, athro prifysgol a dyn teulu. Mae cyfraniad nodedig Meic i ddwy lenyddiaeth Cymru wedi'i gydnabod yn eang, ac yntau wedi ysgrifennu, cyfieithu neu olygu tua 170 o gyfrolau. Gweithiodd yn ddiflino dros ddegawdau lawer, ac er ei fod bellach wedi cyrraedd oed yr addewid mae ei ddiwydrwydd yn parhau. Trodd yn ddiweddar at farddoni yn Wenhwyseg, a daeth o fewn trwch blewyn i gipio Coron yr Eisteddfod

Saddlemates

The mining certificates granting ownership of the Christabel mine that Edward Dugan inherited from his father had a face value of $250,000, but the mine itself had been declared worthless. Still, Henry Christian, the man that had sold them to Dugan’s father, said he’d buy them back for $1,500. Penniless, Dugan decided to walk the three thousand miles from his home in Boston to the mine in the Southwest to check out the offer. But along the way he meets a travel companion named Red. Red knows Christian by reputation, and by another name: Bonanza Chris. He knows the only reason Bonanza Chris would buy the mine back is if he had discovered it was far from worthless. He decides not to abandon Dugan to negotiate with Bonanza Chris on his own, but not even Red can imagine how far Bonanza Chris will go to restake his claim on the mine.

The Word of a Prince

She gives the general reader fresh access to Elizabeth's mind and ideas, her wit, verve, eloquence, circumlocution, and formidable learning. OBSERVER A new approach to historical biography - she has studied both the original sources and recent works of scholarship and has a thorough understanding of the period. SUNDAY TIMES Until Maria Perry began her exploration of Elizabeth's papers, this vivid raw material had only been partially studied. From it, a fresh portrait of Elizabeth emerges, one which is often more cohesive and less baffling than some offered by her biographers. The dangers and insecurities of her early life, her sense of divine protection, her formidable education, all stand out as crucial elements in the formation of her character; but behind the acquired circumspection lies a personality of great warmth and spirit. On the teasing questions of love, marriage and virginity, the letters and speeches offer oblique comment; it seems certain that Robert Dudley was her one true love, and that she felt his second marriage to Lettice Knollys as a bitter betrayal. MARIA PERRY is a graduate of Somerville College, Oxford, where she read history.

This work--the first of its kind in more than sixty years--covers polo in Argentina, from its beginnings in the 1870s to the summer of 2013. The history of the early pioneers is constructed with data not previously published, gathered from contemporary sources. International competitions are covered and include the Olympic Games, the Cup of the Americas and the World Championships. Particular attention is given to the major clubs, the Argentine and Hurlingham Open Championships, and the National Handicap Tournament. Several of the elite players merit individual or family mini-biographies. Myths in Argentine polo are also debunked, based upon careful analysis of contemporary sources. Travels abroad by Argentine teams are fully described as are the foreign teams that competed in Argentina. The work is enhanced by the author's personal observation of significant events and friendship with many of the participants.
