Ever since the publication of Ancel Keys’ watershed ‘Seven Countries Study’ in 1970, medical thinking has posited a causal link between the intake of animal fats and coronary heart disease. The research of Prof. Harumi Okuyama and his colleagues presented in this new publication suggests that this link is in fact tenuous. It goes beyond that to suggest that current medical wisdom regarding lipid nutrition may actually be counterproductive. This ground-breaking analysis is likely to be debated for many years to come. The ‘Seven Countries Study’, which identified the specifics of the Mediterranean Diet and awarded it a central position in combating coronary heart disease, triggered s...

Experimental Criminology

Experimental criminology is a part of a larger and increasingly expanding scientific research and evidence-based movement in social policy. The essays in this volume report on new and innovative contributions that experimental criminology is making to basic scientific knowledge and public policy. Contributors explore cutting-edge experimental and quasi-experimental methods and their application to important and topical issues in criminology and criminal justice, including neurological predictors of violence, peer influence on delinquency, routine activities and capable guardianship, early childhood prevention programs, hot spots policing, and correctional treatment for juvenile and adult offenders. It is the first book to examine the full scope of experimental criminology, from experimental tests - in the field and in the laboratory - of criminological theories and concepts to experimental and quasi-experimental evaluations of crime prevention and criminal justice interventions.

Fatty Acids and Lipids

The publication at hand gives an outline of recent advances in both of these topics, including a general discussion on fatty acid nutrition amd metabolism. Moreover, issues such as vascular functions, inflammation, bone metabolism, cancer, obesity and lipoprotein metabolism are dealt with in this context. Finally, the book also contains new findings on bioactive lipids such as anandamide and related compounds, as well as on conjugated linoleic acid. Scientists interested in nutrition, cardiovascular disease, behavior and psychiatry as well as fatty acid metabolism and lipids in general will find this publication a most welcome source of information.

Essential Fatty Acids and Eicosanoids

Papers from the March 1992 conference explore the importance of EFA and eicosanoids on living organisms. Organization is around five interrelated themes: examination of the biological function of docosahexaenoic acid at the fundamental level of molecular and cellular research; biosynthesis of PUFA in mammals; types of biological markers that can provide information about the adequacy of EFA intake; role that EFA and eicosanoids play in the development of disease states; and in the nutrition of the fetus and newly born infants, especially those born prematurely. Nutrients, Stress and Medical Disorders

A benchmark survey of current clinical findings on the complex interactions between diet, stress, and mental health, and their impact on disease states. The authors give special attention to the influence of stress on physical health, mental health, and cognitive function, including the critical effects of maternal nutritional status and stress levels on fetal physical and mental development, the role of lipids in the development and treatment of depression, the role of fish oil in the development of aggressive behaviors, and the consequences of obesity on stress and the development of eating disorders. Additional chapters examine the effects of stress on chronic disorders, women, and cardiac function, and the influence of inflammation on diet, neurological functions, disease incidence, and cognitive functions.

Wild-type Food in Health Promotion and Disease Prevention

This book presents a cutting-edge, in-depth investigation into new methods of health promotion. It is one of the first books to focus on the role of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids in unhealthy diets. The book also contains reviews of the economic benefits of novel health promotion and disease prevention methods. Leading experts present recent examples and clinical trials.

The Omega-3 Connection

The Omega-3 Connection

THE OMEGA-3 CONNECTION is a persuasive title on why our ancestors relied so much on omega 3 oils, found in oily fish, flaxseed, game, human breast milk and walnuts, for their brain development and general health. We eat far far less omega 3's than our ancestors did, and here, Andrew L. Stoll, M.D. argues that most of us have been deficient in these essential oils from babies onwards, especially if we weren't breastfed. Omega 3's are vital to overall health of the brain and heart. The results are the maladies of our age - depression, post natal depression, an increase in degenerative diseases of the mind like Altzheimers, and an increase in heart attacks and strokes. Backed up by new research from the Universities of Sheffield and Oxford, this is a fantastic pointer to restoring your body and mind's natural balance.

Omega-6/omega-3 Essential Fatty Acid Ratio
  • Language: en

Omega-6/omega-3 Essential Fatty Acid Ratio

Studies on the evolutionary aspects of diet and molecular studies included in this volume indicate that human beings evolved on a diet that was balanced in the essential fatty acids (EFA). In fact, the ratio of omega-6/omega-3 EFA was 1/1 whereas present day diets in both developed and developing countries have a much higher ratio, between 5/1 and 50/1. Additional studies show that a high ratio of omega-6/omega-3 EFA is detrimental to health and may lead to the development of chronic diseases. Improving the dietary ratio by decreasing the omega-6 fatty acids and increasing the omega-3 fatty acids is essential for brain function and for the management of cardiovascular disease, arthritis and cancer. A ratio of 4/1 or less leads to lower dosage and to the reduction of adverse effects of drugs. This volume should be of interest to a large and varied audience of researchers in academia, industry, and government; cardiologists, geneticists, immunologists, neuroscientists, and cancer specialists; as well as nutritionists, dietitians, food scientists, agriculturists, economists and regulators.

Research has clearly established a link between omega-3 fatty acids and general health, particularly cardiovascular health. Omega-3 Fatty Acids in Brain and Neurological Health is the first book to focus exclusively on the role of omega-3 fatty acids on general brain health. The articles in this collection illustrate omega-3 fatty acids' importance in longevity, cognitive impairment, and structure and function of the brain's neurons. Research has established links between omega-3 fatty acids and the developing brain, aging, dementia, Alzheimer's disease and multiple sclerosis. This book encompasses some of the most recent research, including the role of omega-3 fatty acid supplements on hipp...
