A reassessment of fundamental scholarship on the Middle Ages, based on previously unknown medieval written source material. Medieval peasantry represents a particularly attractive unknown for historians, as it is crucial for understanding both later economic growth and the surprising stagnation of some European regions. Our existing knowledge about the social structures and institutions of the medieval peasantry is incomplete, existing only in rough outlines. Almost nothing is known about their real inner dynamics and demographic aspects. This monograph takes on this challenge, taking advantage of the previously unnoticed preserved written sources of the Cheb city-state, a place unique in the European context. Drawing from this material, the book presents a remarkably detailed view of social mobility, migration, and the method of social reproduction of peasantry in the late Middle Ages, including new perspectives on the phenomenon of the disintegration of country settlements during that period.

Zaniklé středověké vsi jsou fascinujícím historickým pramenem, někdy považovaným za klíčový doklad krize tehdejší evropské společnosti. Předkládaná monografie shrnuje hlavní poznávací přístupy zainteresovaných oborů, relevantní ekonomické teorie a také dosavadní interpretace pustnutí a zániku. Navrhuje zaniklé vsi vnímat jako indikátor adaptability a odolnosti předindustriálních rolnických komunit a s tímto prizmatem přistupuje k analýze vybraných regionů a lokalit na pomezí Čech a Německa. Studie má jedinečný a experimentální charakter, neboť kombinuje hlubokou analýzu písemných, kartografických i onomastických pramenů, výsledky tradičního povrchového průzkumu a analýzu reliktů identifikovaných na základě moderních metod dálkového průzkumu země.

The volume is addressed to one of the most fascinating issues in contemporary historical linguistics and medieval studies, which is the extremely fast expansion of the Slavic language across great parts of Europe in the Early Middle Ages. Traditionalists explain the spread of proto-Slavic as a result of migrations in the 6th?7th century and associate that with a specific material culture and with early mentions of ethnic Slavs in written sources. Alternative hypotheses attribute the same evidence to linguistically and genetically quite varied communities and associate the later spread of proto-Slavic with its status as a ?lingua franca? or ?koiné?. 0The papers in the present volume interpret new methodological and empirical findings from several fields of study, not only from the traditional triad of linguistics, archaeology, and historiography, but also from adjacent disciplines such as religious studies, cultural anthropology, archaeogenetics, and others. The unifying thread is that the question of the relations between Slavic language, ethnicity, and material culture has differing answers in different geographical and political contexts.

Uncertain Information Processing in Expert Systems systematically and critically examines probabilistic and rule-based (compositional, MYCIN-like) systems, the two most important families of expert systems dealing with uncertainty. The book features a detailed introduction to probabilistic systems (including methods using graphical models and methods of knowledge integration), an analysis of compositional systems based on algebraic considerations, an application of graphical models, and the Dempster-Shafer theory of evidence and its use in expert systems. The book will be useful to anyone working in artificial intelligence, statistical computing, symbolic logic, and expert systems.
