The late Victorian era was the early heyday of the bicycle, as the introduction of the safety bicycle brought cycling within reach of a whole new audience—including women. Fortunately for the daring lady cyclist of the 1890s, it wasn’t long before guidebooks appeared to tell her just how to set out upon this newfangled adventure. Lady Cycling presents one such book in all its humor and charm. First published in 1897, its quirky pleasures range from amusing anachronisms (“The initial cost of a machine is certainly almost as high as that of a pony”) to advice that can still help beginning cyclists today (“If nervous, or it is a bad crossing, like Regent Circus or by the Marble Arch, it is wisest, if not most dignified, to jump off”). We may have settled the question of whether cycling is an appropriate activity for ladies—to say nothing of the question of whether the corset should be shed for biking—but Lady Cycling nonetheless still offers plenty of entertainment and advice for the modern rider.

Environmental Change and Globalization: Double Exposures

This book explores the connections between two of the most transformative processes of the twenty-first century, namely climate change and globalization. In this book, Leichenko and O'Brien present a conceptual framework for analyzing the interactions between these two processes, and illustrate, through case studies, how these interactions create situations of "double exposure." Drawing upon prominent recent and current climate-related events -- Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans, recurring droughts in India, and the melting of Arctic sea ice -- the case studies each demonstrate a different pathway of interaction between globalization and global environmental change. Through exploration of these pathways of double exposure, the book also shows how broader human security concerns including growing inequalities, growing vulnerabilities, and unsustainable rates of development are integrally connected to both processes of global change. The double exposure framework not only sheds light on the challenges raised by these two global processes, but also reveals possibilities for using the interactions to generate positive opportunities for action.

Stupidity. What is it? Is is just something we see our neighbors and parents/kids do (and members of the opposite political party)? Or is it something more? Why does it seem to be so universal? Are there fundamentals of stupidity that can be recognized? These are the questions discussed in this volume. It presents six fundamentals of stupidity that lead to the stupid choices we see all around us. Included among these are the belief that there are no moral values, that God does not exist, and that it is acceptable to become addicted and to treat others badly and be proud. In the end, we see that the only sure way to avoid the fundamentals of stupidity is through the saving power of Jesus Christ.

Weathering Risk in Rural Mexico

From floods and droughts to tsunamis and hurricanes, recent years have seen a distressing and often devastating increase in extreme climatic events. While it is possible to study these disasters from a purely scientific perspective, a growing preponderance of evidence suggests that changes in the environment are related to both a shift in global economic relations and these weather-related disasters. In Weathering Risk in Rural Mexico, Hallie Eakin draws on ethnographic data collected in three agricultural communities in rural Mexico to show how economic and climatic change are not only linked in cause and effect at the planetary scale but also interact in unpredictable and complex ways in t...
