American Studies in China
This study aims to provide an overview and a close-up of the Chinese academic community that specialises in American Studies. The first section of the study describes the structure of the community; the second part discusses its scholarship. The objectives of this study are to identify where and who the Americanists are, and to examine the images of the United States they present. This data comes from both American and Chinese sources. In the early 80s, the USIA commissioned a number of American scholars to travel to China and make reports on the state of American Studies in the disciplines of economics, history, law and government, and literature.
Radicalism and Its Demise
This book chronicles the dynamics of local and central partypolitics as it describes the Nationalists' turn from radical to status-quo policies and practices. Geisert revisits important issues that continue to engage scholarship on the Republican era--in particular the social and political bases of Guomindang rule. He clarifies how Guomindang factions and to a lesser extent the Chinese Communist Party competed in local-level social movements and political struggles in Jiangsu. While most studies of modern Chinese state-making focus on government institutions, the author reminds us that the party organization must also be considered an important player in this process. Bradley Geisert teaches history at Randolph-Macon Women's College. He has published several papers on the Guomindang in Republican China.

Social science theories of contentious politics have been based almost exclusively on evidence drawn from the European and American experience, and classic texts in the field make no mention of either the Chinese Communist revolution or the Cultural Revolution -- surely two of the most momentous social movements of the twentieth century. Moreover, China's record of popular upheaval stretches back well beyond this century, indeed all the way back to the third century B.C. This book, by bringing together studies of protest that span the imperial, Republican, and Communist eras, introduces Chinese patterns and provides a forum to consider ways in which contentious politics in China might serve to reinforce, refine or reshape theories derived from Western cases.
