Introduction During the week of January 6-10, 1991, the Third U.S.-Japan Conference on Biotechnology was held at the Asian-Pacific Conference Center at the Univer sity of Hawaii in Honolulu. This book is a compilation of the papers and posters presented at the Conference. The Conference was sponsored, in part, by the U.S. pharmaceutical companies including National Science Foundation and Ortho Pharmaceutical, Merck, Genentech, Smith Kline Beecham and ABEe. Its purpose was to promote information exchange between Japanese and U.S. researchers, primarily academics, in biotechnology and to seek ways to carry out collaborative research in biotechnology. The honorary chairmen of the Conference were Professor H. Okada and me. The formal program was organized by Professors 1. Bailey and T. Yoshida. Twelve invited formal presentations were given from each side. In addition, both sides were invited to bring along five observers to the Conference who were encouraged to prepare poster presentations on their research. Paper abstracts plus bibliographies were exchanged prior to the Conference in order to promote maximum technical interaction between the participants.

Advances in Plant Biotechnology

Perilla
Perilla includes review articles describing the cultivation, traditional and modern applications, the chemical, pharmacological, medical and clinical studies of this plant and its active compounds. The cell culture of Perilla, the genetic control of the plant, and the isolation and structural elucidation of a number of its active compounds such as terpenoids, phenolics, glycosides, flavonoids and anthocyanins are discussed. Also reflected is the use of Perilla seed oil, containing a high degree of a-linolenic acid (n-3 fatty acid) an essential fatty acid in human nutrition and beneficial in the treatment of disease. Special focus is given to the recent development in the preparation and application of Perilla leaf extract for the treatment of allergies. This comprehensive treatment of Perilla should be of interest to everyone involved in medicinal and aromatic plant research.
Computer Applications in Biotechnology
The 6th Computer Applications in Biotechnology (CAB6) conference was a continuation of 2 series of events: the IFAC symposia on Modelling and Control of Biotechnical Processes and the International Conferences on Computer Applications in Fermentation Technology. This conference provided the opportunity for both sides, leading researchers and industrial practitioners, in this interdisciplinary field to exchange new ideas and technology; concepts and solutions.
