This report presents the results of a laboratory investigation that was conducted for the purpose of validating mixer- uniformity requirements for roller-compacted concrete. The purpose of the investigation was to verify existing guidance or, if necessary, recommend changes to existing guidance. The investigation included both air-entrained and nonair-entrained concrete. The results indicate that existing guidance is appropriate for Vebe consistency, water content, coarse aggregate content, compressive strength, and air-content determinations. However, the results indicated that existing guidance could he too restrictive for the unit weight of air-free mortar determinations. A recommendation was made to consider revising current guidance on the allowable range for unit weight of air-free mortar.
As part of the study of hydraulic-cement system for use in possible underground isolation of nuclear wastes, this study was made to determine the temperature stability of ettringite and chloroaluminate. Either or both of these phases may be expected in a hydraulic cement system depending on the presence of salt. (NaCl). The study of ettringite was made using 15 mixtures that contained portland cement, plaster, 2 levels of water, and in some mixtures, 1 of 6 pozzolans (3 fly ashes, 1 slag, a silica fume, a natural pozzolan), plus a 16th mixture with anhydrous sodium sulfate replacing plaster (CaSO4 . 1/2H20). Specimens were made and stored at 23°, 50°, and 75 C or 23°, 75°, and 100° C (a...
A salt-saturated concrete was formulated for laboratory testing of cementitious mixtures with potential for use in disposal of radioactive wastes in a geologic repository in halite rock. Cores were taken from a laboratory-cast concrete monolith on completion of tests of permeability, strain and stress. The cores were analyzed for physical and chemical evidence of brine migration through the concrete, and other features with potential impact on installation of crete plugs at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) in New Mexico. The posttest analyses of the cores provided evidence of brine movement along the interface between concrete and pipe, and little indication of permeability through the monolith itself. There may also have been diffusion of chloride into the monolith without actual brine flow.

Civil engineers will value this resource that examines the tools and techniques used to estimate the in-place strength on concrete, permeation properties that relate to potential durability, and the methods used to assess the internal condition of concrete and the corrosion activity of steel reinforcement.
