This thorough account chronicles the creation and use--from the 1840s to today--of Trafalgar Square, one of London's most famous landmarks. Drawing on detailed archival research, this historical analysis describes how the square was initially designed as a military memorial and details why this proved to be such a controversial plan. The square's use as a setting for public demonstration is examined, from the mid-19th-century Chartists to the Vietnam War protestors of the mid-20th century, as well as its role in both disturbing events such as Bloody Sunday and celebrations that include Queen Victoria's Jubilee. Photographs reveal how the square has changed over the years, and this revised edition includes information on its recent transformation into a thriving cultural center complete with outdoor operas and films.

Although Trafalgar Square, with its column and famous lions and fountains, provides an iconic image of London today, it was not until 1830 that the Square acquired its name, and later still, in 1843 – almost 40 years after his death – that Nelson's Column was erected. What was there before? Why was this particular site chosen to commemorate Nelson? The author, Jean Hood, traces the evolution of the Square, through the design and planning of the monument, Parliamentary squabbles and indecision, engineering debacle and overspend, through the rise of the buildings that surround it and the statues that decorate it, to the recent modernisation and pedestrianisation that was completed in 2003,...

Trafalgar Square has been at the heart of London life for over a century and a half, yet it also has international significance. This unique book explores Trafalgar Square, London's first open square, as a focus for protest, celebration and political statement through the development of photography, which coincidentally originated at the same time as Trafalgar Square itself. The momentous events that have taken place in the square have been captured by some of the world's leading photographers, including Henri Cartier-Bresson, Don McCullin and Terence Donovan. A pivotal centre for political protest and national celebration, Trafalgar Square has also provided a dramatic backdrop for fashion shoots, by photographers such as Norman Parkinson and John French, and celebrity portraits, including a well-known shot of Elizabeth Taylor feeding the pigeons. Roger Hargreaves's lively text presents Trafalgar Square's social and cultural history as seen through the eye of the camera.

Trafalgar Square and the Narration of Britishness, 1900-2012

Trafalgar Square and the Narration of Britishness, 1900-2012

London's Trafalgar Square is one of the world's best known public places, and during its relatively short history has seen violent protest, imperial and royal spectacle and wild national celebration. This book draws together scholarship on national identity, cultural geography, and the histories of Britain and London to ask what role the Square has played in narrating British national identity through its many uses. The author focuses on a series of examples to draw out her arguments, ranging from the Suffragettes' use of the site in the early twentieth century to the Fourth Plinth contemporary art scheme in the early twenty-first. The book explores how different users of the Square have understood national identity, and how the site itself has shaped this narrative through its built elements and history of use. Ultimately, Trafalgar Square and the Narration of Britishness, 1900-2012 uses the Square to explore the processes by which urban public place can help to construct, maintain or transform national identity.
