Trafford

Trafford, located in the hills east of Pittsburgh, was officially incorporated as a borough in 1904. Tracks for the Pennsylvania Railroad were laid through in 1852, and the territory became known as Stewart Station. In 1902, land at Stewart Station was purchased by renowned entrepreneur George Westinghouse, with the purpose of constructing a foundry and town to be named Trafford City, after Trafford Park in Manchester, England. Today, with the plant long gone, Trafford survives as a quaint, community-oriented town with an industrial history that all Pittsburghers can appreciate.

The districts of Stretford and Old Trafford are today best known for their sporting links to the football ground of Manchester United and the Lancashire county cricket ground. However, their histories are much more extensive than these (admittedly more famous) connections. With its foundation beginning alongside Watling Street and Roman Manchester, Stretford has been an important area of agricultural production, once being labelled the ‘garden of Lancashire.’Cotton weaving was an important industry and pig farming was so influential that Stretford was nicknamed ‘Porkhampton’. With the development of Trafford Park came urban growth, and Stretford received its charter in 1933. The photographs in this book detail the main changes of the last century, placing them in a broader historical context and showing the parts that trade, industry and transport have played in the development of Stretford and Old Trafford.

Old Trafford

The definitive official account of Old Trafford, home of the Manchester United, reveals the full story behind the ground as it celebrates its 100th anniversary, including exclusive interviews with players, fans, and even those who helped rebuild the ground after the war In the Edwardian era, Manchester's leading football club, Manchester United, was one of the best in the land—but its stadium at Bank Street did not reflect its aspirations.
