Redescriptions
The 2006 volume of Redescriptions has two main themes, the political principles and practices of democratic political representation and the temporal dimension of politics, discussed in six articles and two review articles. Different principles and organizational arrangements play a key role in theories of political representation, in the democratization of suffrage and in the present debates on the modes of equal representation of women. The articles discussing the proper time for politics also refer to issues closely connected to debates on democracy and representation today.
The Ashgate Research Companion to the Politics of Democratization in Europe
'Democratization' is a concept often used in academic book titles, yet not many of them deal with the initial breakthrough of democratization. This research companion presents an alternative view to the widespread assumption that Western democracies should be the normative reference for the study of democratization elsewhere. Rather, it questions the universal validity of such an assumption by searching the history of European politics and by paying specific attention to the struggles of democratization accomplished outside Western Europe. The authors apply a comparative approach to analyzing debates in the primary sources in a number of countries and languages and situate the results into a broader European context. Focusing on European democratization from different historical and analytical perspectives, they discuss the politics, concepts and histories involved in democratization as a complex of changes that has altered the conditions of political action and debate in the continent for the past two centuries.

Redescriptions
With nine articles neatly combining contemporary theorizing and historical approaches to political thought and concepts, this volume of Redescriptions draws attention to two topics several of the contributions share. The Policies of Inclusion
Welfare policies and the ideas of well-being are linked with the ideas of good life. However, the meaning of good life, i.e. what is considered as ‘good life’ gets its meanings contextually. This means that we need to study the ideas of good life in time. The ideas of good life express social and political values and they are articulated in particular terms in particular time and place. The changing ideas of welfare and the ideas of changing approaches on welfare, well-being and knowledge production related to them have been discussed widely in international and Finnish research contexts. This volume is the second – and last – part of publications which stem from the 20th Anniversary Seminar of the Research Unit on Disability at University of Eastern Finland. It offers a multivoiced collection of research discussions from research in the fields of welfare and inclusion.
Back Over the Sexual Contract
Is patriarchy an illness of democratic societies or a structural problem? To answer this dilemma, Back Over the Sexual Contract: A Hegelian Critique of Patriarchy examines the dilemma of patriarchy in modern European political theory by reopening the question of the "sexual contract." Through a study of the thought of Thomas Hobbes, John Locke, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, and Immanuel Kant, Lorenzo Rustighi argues that the conceptual roots of male patriarchal entitlement should be sought in the logic of authorized power that underpins the modern understanding of both the state and the family. Challenging the mainstream distinction between the private and the public, Rustighi provocatively suggests that patriarchy is not something that undermines democracy as an alien threat, but is rather inscribed in the intrinsically anti-democratic effects of the concept of democracy construed by the modern rationale of the social contract. He puts forward a Hegelian argument to propose an unconventional constitutional approach to feminist political theory that helps us rethink democracy beyond its inherent impasses.
Voices from Gender Studies
The book is aimed at providing an assertion of Gender Studies as a vital community in our time, united in a commitment to inquiry. It brings forward an interdisciplinary set of early career researchers’ accounts of their motives for engaging in Gender Studies and, of the encounters with limitations as well as possibilities they experience on the paths they have chosen. Each chapter is accompanied by a brief response paper where a more senior researcher involves in conversation with respective chapter’s content and shares reflections regarding Gender Studies, its integration, and developments. The first level corresponds with the significance of research in the field and its transformative power in and, crucially, outside the academia. The second relates to the value of networking and community building for doing research. The book presents Gender Studies in a communicative, open manner that invites the reader to engage in and continue the displayed discussions. This book will be of interest to students and scholars of gender studies, sociology, queer studies, women’s studies, trans studies, anthropology, and literary studies.
Redescriptions
Following the profile of recent issues of the Yearbook, volume 13 (2009) of Redescriptions focuses on contemporary debates around the concept of democracy. Several articles, by scholars from different fields (political theory, philosophy, history, rhetoric, women's studies, law), discuss the present state and future prospects of democracy, its relationship to other concepts (deliberation, rhetoric, parliament, majority vs. minority) as well as its (in)compatibility with the power of the courts and the expertise. In this volume examples of conceptual histories are provided by articles on women's suffrage and friendship.
