Syrian Kurds, the Democratic Union Party (PYD), and the Strategic Framing of the Civil War

The book mainly analyzes the lobbying attempts of the PYD to sell its model of governance through the specific arguments with a purpose for engaging with the international powers, the US and the UK, and these countries’ responsiveness towards the PYD arguments. While analyzing the PYD’s strategies for lobbying and the responsiveness of the US and the UK, the book also considers the counter-lobbying efforts of Turkey and its potential challenges on these countries’ responsiveness towards the PYD arguments. The author argues that the responsiveness of the US and the UK towards the PYD arguments is mainly related to these countries’ policy stances and policy objectives in Syria during the civil war. In this regard, the overlapping or conflicting policy objectives between the PYD, the Turkish government, and the US and the UK play a significant role in the responsiveness of these countries towards the PYD arguments.

Soft Tissue Biomechanical Modeling for Computer Assisted Surgery

This volume focuses on the biomechanical modeling of biological tissues in the context of Computer Assisted Surgery (CAS). More specifically, deformable soft tissues are addressed since they are the subject of the most recent developments in this field. The pioneering works on this CAS topic date from the 1980's, with applications in orthopaedics and biomechanical models of bones. More recently, however, biomechanical models of soft tissues have been proposed since most of the human body is made of soft organs that can be deformed by the surgical gesture. Such models are much more complicated to handle since the tissues can be subject to large deformations (non-linear geometrical framework) ...

Sharia and the Making of the Modern Egyptian

Sharia and the Making of the Modern Egyptian

In this book, the author examines sijills, the official documents of the Ottoman Islamic courts, to understand how sharia law, society and the early-modern economy of sixteenth- and seventeenth-century Ottoman Cairo related to the practice of custom in determining rulings. In the sixteenth century, a new legal and cultural orthodoxy fostered the development of an early-modern Islam that broke new ground, giving rise to a new concept of the citizen and his role. Contrary to the prevailing scholarly view, this work adopts the position that local custom began to diminish and decline as a source of authority. These issues resonate today, several centuries later, in the continuing discussions of individual rights in relation to Islamic law.
