Women Workers in Turkey

Globalisation is often considered as not only generating jobs, but also having a negative effect on those at the bottom of the labour supply chain. Here Saniye Dedeoglu shows us exactly how globalisation has affected women engaged in insecure, invisible and low/unpaid garment work. Through a close ethnographic study of women workers in Istanbul's garment industry, she reveals how industries have adapted their labour demands to make use of local female labour supplies, and highlights the strategies and responses that have evolved in response to contemporary changes in global industrial production in Turkey. Dedeoglu shows how production for global markets has seeped into local labour markets, contributing to a culture of work which is informal and whose participants are often invisible. "Women Workers in Turkey" throws up the critical question of what it means to be a woman in today's globalised society, and is an important contribution to the various perspectives on the social and economic consequences of globalization to the least priviliged in industrial socieities.

First published in 1999, this volume applies Professor Michael Porter’s diamond framework (1990) to the Turkish glass, construction, leather clothes, automobile and flat steel industries. Her research presents a new approach to evaluate the competitiveness of the Turkish economy, given that alternative studies usually focus on factors like exchange rates and the cost of labour and raw materials as the determinants of competitive advantage. The author begins her book by providing an evaluation of the diamond framework linked to th...

This book brings together academics and experts on Turkish network industries. It provides fundamental information on the current developments regarding regulation of the different network industries in Turkey. Turkey has gone through a liberalization process in most of the network industries during the past 20 years. In most of them, independent regulatory authorities have been established, but some network industries are still remaining under the central or local government regulatory regime. As a result, there is now a very complicated regulatory regime in place which makes Turkey’s regulatory system difficult to understand for practitioners, academics, lawyers, researchers and investor...
