Bioenergetics

The fermentation of sugar by cell-free yeast extracts was demonstrated more than a century ago by E. Buchner (Nobel Prize 1907). Buchner’s observations put an end to previous animistic theories regarding cellular life. It became clear that metabolism and all cellular functions should be accessible to explication in chemical terms. Equally important for an understanding of living systems was the concept, explained in physical terms, that all living things could be cons- ered as energy converters [E. Schrödinger (Nobel Prize 1933)] which generate complexity at the expense of an increase in entropy in their environment. Bioenergetics was established as an essential branch of the biochemical ...

This second edition provides an enhanced exposition of the long-overlooked Hadamard semidifferential calculus, first introduced in the 1920s by mathematicians Jacques Hadamard and Maurice René Fréchet. Hadamard semidifferential calculus is possibly the largest family of nondifferentiable functions that retains all the features of classical differential calculus, including the chain rule, making it a natural framework for initiating a large audience of undergraduates and non-mathematicians into the world of nondifferentiable optimization. Introduction to Optimization and Hadamard Semidifferential Calculus, Second Edition builds upon its prior edition’s foundations in Hadamard semidifferent...

Methods in Methane Metabolism, Part A

Produced by microbes on a large scale, methane is an important alternative fuel as well as a potent greenhouse gas. This volume focuses on microbial methane metabolism, which is central to the global carbon cycle. Both methanotrophy and methanogenesis are covered in detail. Topics include isolation and classification of microorganisms, metagenomics approaches, biochemistry of key metabolic enzymes, gene regulation and genetic systems, and field measurements. The state-of-the-art techniques described here will both guide researchers in specific pursuits and educate the wider scientific community about this exciting and rapidly developing field. - Topics include isolation and classification of microorganisms, metagenomics approaches, biochemistry of key metabolic enzymes, gene regulation and genetic systems, and field measurements - The state-of-the-art techniques described here will both guide researchers in specific pursuits and educate the wider scientific community about this exciting and rapidly developing field

Report of the Consultation on the Establishment of a Fisheries Credit Network for Asia and the Pacific

The aim of the Consultation was to review problems and prospects of the fisheries sector in the region as well as of institutional fisheries credit and to make recommendations as to how to strengthen fisheries credit delivery and recovery through regional networking. The Consultation looked at the current investment requirements and credit needs in selected countries of the region, discussed case studies of successful institutional credit programmes, and prepared a proposal for the establishment of a fisheries credit network.
