Sri Lanka: ClimBeR Inception Workshop Report. Report of the ClimBeR Inception Workshop, Colombo, Sri Lanka, 10 April 2023

Climate variability and extreme weather events such as floods and droughts continue to increase due to climate change. These changes will have significant impacts on low- and middle-income countries. Without transformative climate adaptation solutions, millions of smallholder farmers will face severe losses because of increased climate variability. The CGIAR Initiative on Climate Resilience (‘ClimBeR’) was designed to develop bold transformative climate actions by delivering science and innovation to transform food, land, and water systems that will help smallholder farmers and local communities better adapt to the impacts of climate variability. ClimBeR aims to increase the adaptive cap...

The report examines the relationships between agricultural policies in the North China Plain, the approaches to water management that evolved from them, the quantity of water that was actually used, and the consequent groundwater depletion beneath Luancheng County, Hebei Province, from 1949 to 2000. To systematically address these relationships, we use a comprehensive water-balance approach. Our results indicate that a single, longstanding policy-that of using groundwater to meet the crop-water requirements not supplied by precipitation-is responsible for the steady rate of groundwater decline.

Gender and Sustainability

Gender and Sustainability deals with women's struggles to contend with global forces—environmental change, economic development, discrimination and stereotyping about the roles of women, and diminishing access to natural resources—not in the abstract but in everyday life. It addresses the lived complexities of the relationship between gender and sustainability.
