This book explores how writers adhered to, played with, and subverted the formulaic precepts of educational transformation in the German Democratic Republic.
A fascinating and highly readable account of what it was like to be young and hip, growing up in East Germany in the 1950s and 1960s. Living on the frontline of the Cold War, young people were subject to a number of competing influences. For young men from the working class, in particular, a conflict developed between the culture they inherited from their parents and the new official culture taught in schools. Merging with street gangs, new youth cultures took shape, which challenged authority and provided an alternative vision of modernity. Taking their fashion cues, music and icons from the West, they rapidly came into conflict with a didactic and highly controlling party-state. Charting the clashes which occurred between teenage rebels and the authorities, the book explores what happened when gender, sexuality, Nazism, communism and rock 'n' roll collided during a period, which also saw the building of the Berlin Wall.
The most common explanations view either the socialist past or larger scale processes of modernization to be the cause of eastern German secularization. The volume attempts to discover historically variable reconfigurations of religion and the secular at the local level.
What was life really like for East Germans, effectively imprisoned behind the Iron Curtain? She explores the transformation of East German society from the ruins of Hitler's Third Reich to a modernizing industrial state. She examines changing conceptions of normality within an authoritarian political system, and provides extraordinary insights into the ways in which individuals perceived their rights and actively sought to shape their own lives. Replacing the simplistic black-and-white concept of “totalitarianism” by the notion of a “participatory dictatorship,” this book seeks to reinstate the East German people as actors in their own history.
The role of World Exhibitions in the 19th and early 20th centuries was to confirm a relation between the nation state and modernity. As a display about industries, inventions and identities, the Exhibition, in a sense, put entire nations into an elevated, viewable space. It is a significant element in modernity as comparisons can be made, progress is assumed and the future can be made manageable. The Exhibition links the national and local, with the international and global. Nationalism and internationalism are in tension in the space, and so is the relation between government, business and media. The educational dimension of Exhibitions is an area of research rich in possibilities for historians of education. It is a dimension of comparative education which illuminates classifications and genealogies, networks and audiences, cross border industries of education, and the factors which shape discursive and technical exchanges. Displays of education objects can be read as demonstrations of modernity in education and schooling. They were catalogues of the future.
