As entries for UK school exams in modern foreign languages decrease, this book serves the urgent need for research and guidance on ab initio learning and teaching in higher education. Drawing extensively on the expertise of teachers of German in universities across the UK, the volume offers an overview of recent trends, new pedagogical approaches, and practical guidance for teaching languages at the beginners' level in the higher education classroom that will be useful for teachers of both German and other languages. The first chapters assess the role of ab initio provision within the wider context of modern language departments and language centers. They are followed by sections on teaching methods and approaches in the ab initio classroom, including the use of music, textbook evaluation, effective use of flipped classrooms, and the contribution of language apps. Finally, the book focuses on the learner in the ab initio context and explores issues around autonomy and learner strengths.

Innovative language teaching and learning at university: a look at new trends
The present volume collects papers from InnoConf18, which took place at the University of Liverpool in June 2018. The theme of the conference was ‘New trends in language teaching and learning at university’. The contributions collected here aim to reflect on best practice in the sector while at the same time capturing state-of-the-art language teaching and learning methodologies. The short papers in this peer-reviewed selection display examples of active learning and student empowerment across all levels of learning and demonstrate the benefits of maximising engagement through a creative and inspiring learning environment. Handreichung Tagesgruppen
Das Interesse an der Hilfeform Tagesgruppen ist in den letzten Jahren wieder gewachsen. Gefragt sind insbesondere Tagesgruppen für Kinder und Jugendliche im Vorschul- und Schulalter und deren Familien. Angesichts neuer gesetzlicher Rahmungen, der Entwicklung von Ganztagsschulkonzepten und Anfragen nach einem inklusiven Entwicklungskonzept stellt sich aber auch die Frage, wie die Tagesgruppenarbeit die Vorbereitung und den Übergang in Regelinstitutionen individuell und gut vernetzt gestalten kann. Die Handreichung, die unter intensiver Mitarbeit der IGfH-Fachgruppe Tagesgruppen angeregt und zusammengestellt wurde, enthält kurze Einführungsbeiträge zur Entwicklung der Hilfeform Tagesgruppen, zu den zentralen Handlungsbereichen und stellt vor allem eine Fülle von Beispielen für innovative Ansätze in der Tagesgruppenarbeit vor. Dieser Titel ist eine Veröffentlichung der Internationalen Gesellschaft für erzieherische Hilfen (IGfH).
