World Urbanization Prospects
The report presents findings from the 2018 revision of World Urbanization Prospects, which contains the latest estimates of the urban and rural populations or areas from 1950 to 2018 and projections to 2050, as well as estimates of population size from 1950 to 2018 and projections to 2030 for all urban agglomerations with 300,000 inhabitants or more in 2018. The world urban population is at an all-time high, and the share of urban dwellers, is projected to represent two thirds of the global population in 2050. Continued urbanization will bring new opportunities and challenges for sustainable development.
International Recommendations for Energy Statistics (IRES)
The International Recommendations for Energy Statistics (IRES) have been prepared by the United Nations Statistics Division in close cooperation with countries and other international/regional organizations and adopted by the United Nations Statistical Commission in February 2011. IRES was developed to assist countries in the establishment and strengthening of their energy statistical programmes. In particular, IRES provides data compilers with a complete set of recommendations covering all aspects of the statistical production process from basic concepts, definitions, classifications and measurement units to data sources, institutional and legal framework, data compilation strategies, energy balances, data quality and statistical dissemination. It also contains the Standard International Energy Product Classification (SIEC) which is the first internationally agreed classification of energy products. Energy is central to the achievement of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Paris Agreement on climate change, and sound energy statistics are the basis for the reliable measurement of progress, thereby assisting the formulation of policy measures to achieve international and national sustainable development goals.
World Population Ageing, 1950-2050
Population ageing is an enduring and global phenomenon which is the result of the demographic transition from high to low levels of fertility and mortality. This report considers the process of population ageing for the world as a whole; for developed and developing regions; for major areas and regions; and for individual countries. It contains demographic profiles covering the period 1950 to 2050 for each country giving a range of socio-economic and demographic indicators which highlight population ageing trends. The report finds that by 2050, the number of older persons (those aged 60 years or over) in the world will exceed the number of young persons (aged under 15 years) for the first time in history. This will have major social, economic and political implications including the effects on economic growth and labour markets, pensions and health care, family composition and housing, migration trends and voting patterns.
Guidelines on the Use of Statistical Business Registers for Business Demography and Entrepreneurship Statistics
The Guidelines provide practical guidance on how to develop and maintain statistical business registers to support the production of business demography and entrepreneurship statistics. The Guidelines contain definitions and compilation guidance for key demographic events and propose business demography indicators that can be produced directly from the register. They also describe the requirements for the register to produce business demography indicators and provide guidance on linking the register with other data sources.
Practical Guidebook on Data Disaggregation for the Sustainable Development Goals
The "leave no one behind" principle espoused by the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development requires measures of progress for different segments of the population. This entails detailed disaggregated data to identify subgroups that might be falling behind, to ensure progress toward achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The Asian Development Bank and the Statistics Division of the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs developed this practical guidebook with tools to collect, compile, analyze, and disseminate disaggregated data. It also provides materials on issues and experiences of countries regarding data disaggregation for the SDGs. This guidebook is for statisticians and analysts from planning and sector ministries involved in the production, analysis, and communication of disaggregated data.
