The 21st New York was in the thick of the Civil War in the Shenandoah Valley from January 1864 to the end of the war. The regiment fought against Confederate generals, guerrillas, and partisan rangers such as John Singleton Mosby. It fought in the Battle of New Market, accompanied David Hunter on his raid to Lynchburg, opposed Jubal Early in his 1864 Maryland offensive, and engaged in countless additional skirmishes in Virginia and West Virginia. In June 1865, the 21st was transferred to the Colorado territory for guard duty along the Overland Stage Route. It was mustered out there in August 1866. Sabres in the Shenandoah provides an almost day-by-day account of the men of the regiment and their battles, skirmishes, activities, and hardships.

The Irish in the American Civil War

Just under 200,000 Irishmen took part in the American Civil War, making it one of the most significant conflicts in Irish history. Hundreds of thousands more were affected away from the battlefield, both in the US and in Ireland itself. The Irish contribution, however, is often only viewed through the lens of famous units such as the Irish Brigade, but the real story is much more complex and fascinating. From the Tipperary man who was the first man to die in the war, to the Corkman who was the last General mortally wounded in action; from the flag bearer who saved his regimental colours at the cost of his arms, to the Roscommon man who led the hunt for Abraham Lincoln's assassin, what emerges in this book is a catalogue of gallantry, sacrifice and bravery.

Educating the Disfranchised and Disinherited

Best remembered as the founder of Hampton Institute and mentor of Booker T. Washington, Samuel Chapman Armstrong played a crucial role in white philanthropy and educational strategies toward nonwhite people in late-nineteenth-century America. Until now, however, there has been no scholarly biography of Armstrong--his story has usually been subsumed within that of his famous protégé. In Educating the Disfranchised and Disinherited, Robert Francis Engs illuminates both Armstrong's life and an important chapter in the history of American race relations. Armstrong was the son of missionaries to Hawaii, and as Engs makes clear, his early experiences in a multiracial, predominantly non-European ...
