The genial but troubled New Englander whose single-minded partisan loyalties inflamed the nation's simmering battle over slavery Charming and handsome, Franklin Pierce of New Hampshire was drafted to break the deadlock of the 1852 Democratic convention. Though he seized the White House in a landslide against the imploding Whig Party, he proved a dismal failure in office. Michael F. Holt, a leading historian of nineteenth-century partisan politics, argues that in the wake of the Whig collapse, Pierce was consumed by an obsessive drive to unify his splintering party rather than the roiling country. He soon began to overreach. Word leaked that Pierce wanted Spain to sell the slave-owning island...

Franklin Pierce - Young Hickory of the Granite Hills is the biography of Franklin Pierce, an American politician and the fourteenth President of the United States, serving from 1853 to 1857. To date, Franklin Pierce is the only president from the State of New Hampshire. Pierce was a Democrat and a "doughface" (a Northerner with Southern sympathies) who served in the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate. Later, Pierce took part in the Mexican-American War and became a brigadier general. The most controversial event of Pierce's presidency was the Kansas-Nebraska Act, which repealed the Missouri Compromise and reopened the question of slavery in the West. Franklin Pierce - Young Hickory of the Granite Hills is highly recommended for those interested in reading more about this popular military figure and American President.

Although there has been little scholarly interest in Franklin Pierce, the issues of his administration--the Kansas-Nebraska Act, turmoil over Kansas, the Abolitionist crusade, the enforcement of the 1850 Fugitive Slave Act--and the political convulsions that took place have all been of interest, particularly to scholars examining the causes of the Civil War. This annotated bibliography provides information on sources pertaining to Pierce, his times, his administration, and other important figures in the government. The work also includes an introduction, chronology of Pierce's life, and indexes.

"Franklin Pierce - - the fourteenth President of the United Sates - - has existed in the public mind as a stereotype rather than as a many-sided human being. The predominate picture that we have of him is that of a weak and shallow man, a "mediocrity" who left little imprint upon the history of the United States. This stereotype, however, is grossly misleading, for Franklin Pierce was not a simple man. Indeed, his personality was complex, made up of varying strengths and conflicting inadequacies, while his life, full of inner turmoil, had an aspect of overwhelming tragedy. This authoritative biography makes available a full-scale study of an unusually interesting human being. With the same t...
