Rock Art Of Kentucky
Rock Art of Kentucky is the first comprehensive documentation of the fragile remnants of Kentucky's prehistoric Native American rock art sites. Found in twenty-two of Kentucky's counties, these sites pan a period of more than three thousand years. The most frequent design elements in Kentucky rock art are engravings of the footprints of birds, quadrupeds, and humans. The City
Over the past eight years, Lori Nix (born 1969) has created meticulously detailed model environments and then photographed them--locations within a fictional city that celebrate modern culture, knowledge and innovation. But her monuments of civilization are abandoned, in a state of ruin where nature has begun to repopulate the spaces. "I am fascinated, maybe even a little obsessed, with the idea of the apocalypse. In addition to my childhood experiences growing up with natural disasters in Kansas, I also watched disaster flicks in the 1970s. Each of these experiences has greatly influenced my photographic work." Nix considers herself a "faux landscape photographer" and spends months building the complex spaces before photographing them. As critic Sidney Lawrence wrote in Art in America: "Oddly endearing, terrifying and often electrifyingly plausible, [Nix's tableaux] prod us to ponder the fact that, like it or not, our fate is uncertain."

For over four decades, Richard Buswell has trained his camera on the landscape of Montana, with its abandoned and overgrown homesteads and majestic, never-ending skies. In the recent work assembled in this volume, Buswell’s fourth book, his subjects are much more than scattered remains. His black-and-white photographs frame cast-off, common things to reveal abstract patterns in the tradition of twentieth-century modernist photography. As Buswell puts it, his work is “more interpretive and abstract than it is documentary. The images explore the junction where decaying artifacts become visual echoes of the past.” To create a portfolio of images that make us look anew at the West requires a mix of courage and patience, of persistence and imagination. Richard Buswell has shown just these qualities as he has turned a youthful hobby into a powerful means for exploring the past and present of his Montana homeland.
