Prudentius and the Landscapes of Late Antiquity offers a thematic analysis of the poetry of the late Latin poet Prudentius, focusing in particular on his descriptions of the geographical and cultural landscapes of late antiquity. Cillian O'Hogan sets Prudentius in the context of other late antique authors, including Lactantius, Jerome, Augustine, and Endelechius, and argues that the poet makes use of allusion to Augustan and early imperial Latin authors to present the late Roman landscape as one markedly altered by the arrival of Christianity, though retaining the grandeur of the pagan past. This volume examines his conception of the world as a text, his use of intertextuality to describe literary journeys, his view of the civic function of Christian martyrdom, his conception of heaven, and his attitude towards art and architecture, combining philological and intertextual criticism with approaches drawn from the fields of book history, cultural geography, and theology to paint a fuller and richer picture of the greatest of the Christian Latin poets.

This volume presents expanded versions of papers read at a bi-national symposium convened in Jerusalem in December 1992. Organised within the framework of meetings held world-wide in remembrance of the expulsion of the Jews from Spain in 1492, this conference focused on aspects of the profession and ethics of medicine. The major topics explored at the symposium were the relationships among physicians of different denominations and between them and the authorities; the image and status of the converso physician; questions of medical licensing and compensation; attitudes regarding suffering, pain and the care of infants; and the influence of medieval Jewish and Moslem religious law concepts underlying the care and treatment of patients. Other papers relate to the early modern period and to current problems of medical ethics, illustrating the impact of historical approaches on the development of the discipline of medical ethics today.

This issue of "Zeitsprunge" collects a variety of theoretical approaches to and exemplary readings of medieval and early modern practices of commentary from the point of view of Arabic, Latin, Jewish, English, German, and Romance Studies. Since antiquity, commentaries have accompanied sacred, cultural, and literary texts, serving to justify their relevance and canonicity. They have been instruments for the transmission of legal and religious norms and values, as well as purveyors of ancient knowledge which has to be preserved verbatim, and yet be kept open for future communication. At times, the commentary even attains a sovereignty of interpretation that can supersede or push aside any original intentions of the text. Thus, the study of commentary is key to describing aspects of authority, institutionality, creativity, and textual empowerment from a comparative perspective.
