From an intercultural perspective, this book focuses on aesthetic strategies and forms of representation in premodern Christian and Islamic sepulchral art. Seeing the tomb as an interface for eschatological, political, and artistic debate, the contributions analyze the diversity of memorial space configurations. The subjects range from the complex interaction between architecture and tomb topography through to questions relating to the funereal expression of power and identity, and to practices of ritual realization in the context of individual and collective memory.
Images and Objects in Ritual Practices in Medieval and Early Modern Northern and Central Europe
This multidisciplinary collection of essays explores the functions, meanings and use of images and objects in various late Medieval and Early Modern social practices, which were linked by their ritual character. The book approaches ‘ritual’ as an action which is discussed under the general umbrella term “performative practice”, and is characterised by a synthesis between the repetitive and the extraordinary that carries an intense symbolic meaning and is emotionally charged. Images, spaces and rituals were closely interconnected in both the religious and the secular spheres, and played a relevant role in the symbolic communication of the time. The essays in this volume are devoted to a complex study of these phenomena in Northern and Central Europe, including regions which, due to linguistic or cultural barriers, have thus far received comparatively little attention in Anglo-American scholarship, including Scandinavia, Poland and the Baltic states.

Heinzer's book, a series of case studies, deals with the fundamental relation between monastic reform and book production in the middle ages in the southwestern part of the German-speaking area during the period from the 9th to the early 16th century. This book, thus, might be considered as a complementary contribution to a long-term project, initiated by scholars of mediaeval german studies (Nigel Palmer and Hans-Jochen Schiewer), of reconstructing a "Literary Topography of south-west Germany", dealing however almost exclusively with Latin texts and focussing not as much on more specifically litterary matters, but rather on aspects of formal (esthetical) interest as well as on the conditions of writing and reading and on the social formations which fostered the production and dissemination of texts and books.
