Explorations in Aging

The three of us, working in different institutions but in the same city, were very aware of the differences between our diverse approaches to the biology of aging and our perceptions of the sub ject matter. However, three years ago we began to hold informal meetings to discuss our research. These meetings eventually be came more frequent and, with this association, we became increas ingly cognizant of the commonality of our research problems de spite our separate perspectives. The idea for this symposium, therefore, grew from our aware ness that the underlying problem of the biological basis for aging was a common denominator in our research. The papers presented here represent three areas o...

Molecular Basis of Aging is a collection of papers that discuss the molecular aspects of aging in the light of molecular biology, biochemical gerontology, and genetics. Each chapter of the book contains a different study about the topic, which includes the effects of aging on DNA synthesis; the amplification of extrachromosomal circular copies and mitochondrial DNA during aging; and the altered actions of hormones and neurotransmitters during aging. The book also encompasses the loss of responsiveness to growth factors in cell senescence; the integration of cellular-molecular and neuroendocrine concepts of aging; changes and inactivation of enzymes during aging; and the relationship of aging with free radicals. The text is recommended for molecular biologists, biochemists, and gerontologists who wish to study further the effects of aging on the body on a molecular level.

Cell Impairment in Aging and Development

lar aging, to which this model contributes, has grown. Apart from reports on work in this almost "classical" diploid cell system, the symposium presents studies using different biological systems with results that have been rewarding as information is obtained on patterns of change that are common to more than one experimental system. Indeed, in recent years much more has been learned about the fate of all different types of intermitotic and postmitotic cells in situ. The symposium has also presented contributions dealing, not directly with aging but with early ontogeny; such information on early developmental changes should certainly shed light on some of the mechanisms involved in aging. Optical microscopy is developing into nanoscopy and multimodal microscopy the better to decipher the functioning mechanisms in living systems, and investigating biological specimens at molecular level using fluorescence as a mechanism of contrast. Results have demonstrated the potential to provide information at the Angstrom level. Other optical methods now offer more in terms of spatial and temporal resolution, making it possible to study the delicate and complex relationship between structure and function in cells. Modern optical microscopes also use the decisive advantage provided by artificial intelligence algorithms. All in all, a rapidly changing field with an increasing number of ques...

The Encyclopedia of Aging

A COMPREHENSIVE RESOURCE ON GERONTOLOGY AND GERIATRICS Since its inception in 1987, The Encyclopedia of Aging has proven to be the definitive resource for scholars and students across the burgeoning and increasingly interdisciplinary fields of gerontology and geriatrics. Like its three esteemed predecessors, the fourth edition contains concise, readable explorations of hundreds of terms, concepts, and issues related to the lives of older adults, as well as timely coverage of the many new programs and services for the elderly. Updated, under the distinguished stewardship of editor-in-chief Richard Schulz to reflect the infusion of new information across the scientific disciplines, this new ed...
