A Manual for Dryland Afforestation and Management

Community-oriented conservation of natural resources and promotion and protection of trees in drylands are examples to deal with climatic adversities. This book provides knowledge on climatic, ecological, social and economic condition of dry areas and lay out approaches and strategies to restore degraded lands. There are 15 chapters and first five deals with physiography of Rajasthan, drylands ecology, problems of land degradation, its economic evaluation and the approaches and strategies of restoration and rehabilitation. Next two chapters describe the problems of sand drift, salinity, water logging and effluent inflicted areas and strategies to control them. Chapters 8-10 deal with seed pr...

Indian Sarcoscyphaceous Fungi

This book contains an illustrated account of the Indian Sarcoscyphaceous Fungi, which are part of the Discomycete group under the Phylum Ascomycota. Detailed morphological study of 78 specimens mainly collected from the Himalayan hill, Foot hills and plains around Varanasi, U. P. constitute the bulk of this book. Twenty type/authentic collections of different species were also obtained from different foreign herbaria for comparison with our own specimens. Photographs of most of these specimens, their notations as well as labels have been included in appendix. They are very important from the point of view of taxonomy. All these vastly add to the value of this publication. Major collection sites and distribution of different genera have also been given in appendix. The 78 specimens represent 20 species belonging to 11 genera falling into 2 families of the suborder Sarcoscyphaceae of the order Pezizales.

Socioeconomic and Environmental Impacts of Biofuels

  • Categories: Law

Biofuels are currently in the middle of a heated academic and public policy debate. Biofuel production has increased fivefold in the past decade and is expected to further double by 2020. Most of this expansion will happen in developing nations. This volume is the first of its kind, providing a comprehensive overview of the biofuel debate in developing countries. The chapters are written by a multidisciplinary team of experts, exposing the key drivers and impacts of biofuel production and use. The book covers impacts as diverse as air pollution, biodiversity loss, deforestation, energy security, food security, greenhouse gas emissions, land use change, rural development, water consumption and other socioeconomic issues. Its wide focus accommodates examples from countries in Africa, America and Asia. As such, this book will become an indispensable companion to academics, practitioners and policy makers who wish to know more about biofuel issues in the developing world.

Agroforestry (AF) is a dynamic, ecologically based, natural resources management system that, by integrating trees on farms, ranches, and in other landscapes, diversifies and increases production and promotes social, economic, and environmental benefits for land users. Further, it is receiving increasing attention as a sustainable land-management option worldwide because of its ecological, economic, and social attributes. Advances have been achieved by building on past research accomplishments and expanding AF’s stakeholder base, which now includes private/public partnerships, communities, ecologists, farmers, indigenous peoples, and policymakers in both temperate and tropical countries.
