This book is a contribution to humanistic studies of illness. Medical humanities are by nature cross-disciplinary, and in recent years studies in this field have been recognized as a platform for dialogue between the “two cultures” of the natural sciences and the humanities. Illness in Context is a result of an encounter of several disciplines, including medicine, history and literature. The main stress is on the literary perspectives of the interdisciplinary collaboration. The reading practices highlighting the clinical, phenomenological and archeological approaches to illness take as their point of departure the living text, that is, the literary experience mediated and created by the ...

Bogen udkom første gang i 2000.

Begærets by

Interface Criticism

  • Categories: Art

From the screen of our laptops, and from the ubiquitous portable devices, smart phones, and media players, to the embedded computation in clothes, architecture and big urban screens, interfaces are everywhere. They are simultaneously demanding our attention and computing quietly in the background, turning action into inter-action, and mediating our experience of and relations to the social and environmental. But how can aesthetics respond to this, and how do interfaces set the scene for artistic practices? Interface Criticism is not another design manual but a critical investigation for readers interested in the aesthetic, cultural and political dimensions of interfaces. With contributions f...

In the late 19th century, Norwegian writer Skram had a nervous breakdown and entered a mental hospital for what she thought would be a brief respite from creative stress. Instead she found herself caught in a tug-of-war with a tyrannical doctor. This hefty novel is a slightly fictionalized version of that experience. Else Kant is a painter who agrees to be hospitalized for treatment of depression and insomnia. Every action and statement she makes is misinterpreted, and when she reacts to these misdiagnoses, she is branded irrational and hostile. Disappointed that her husband has not come to visit, she refuses to read his letters, and he is informed that she is furious with him and does not wish to see him. The evil Professor Hieronimus antagonizes and taunts her, and eventually transfers her to a second hospital, whose superintendent refuses to release her because of her open and venomous hatred for the professor. A smooth and natural translation conveys the frustration of these experiences and the creepy atmosphere at both hospitals.

Georg Brandes (1842-1927) was one of the leading literary critics in Europe of his time. His Main Currents of Nineteenth Century Literature (1872-1890) was a foundational text to the field of comparative literature and extolled by Thomas Mann as the “Bible of the young intellectual Europe at the turn of the century.” Georg Brandes eventually developed into a truly global public intellectual, living by his pen and public lectures. On the eve of World War I, he was one of the most sought-after commentators, vigorously opposing all conflicting factions. This book seeks to understand Brandes’ trajectory, to evaluate Brandes’ significance for current discussions of literary criticism and public engagement, and to introduce Brandes to an international audience. It consists of 15 original chapters commissioned from experts in the field.

Savnets vellyst.

Bogen udkom første gang i 1990.
