This book explores English as a Lingua Franca (ELF) use in online interaction within virtual communities constituted by fans of popular culture texts who engage in creative writing inspired by such texts. Emerging from globalization processes, ELF, computer-mediated-communication, and fandom are here conceptualized as postmodern phenomena, characterized by fluidity, hybridity, and translocal practices, which include the exploitation of plurilingual resources on the part of non-native users communicating in English. This study adopts and applies the notions of linguistic heteroglossia and super-diversity to the qualitative analysis of a fan fiction corpus constituted of online-published stories inspired by Japanese media texts, in which fan writers bring their sociocultural and linguistic repertoires to bear on their stories, interspersing narration and dialogue with non-English language elements to fulfil social, narrative, and pragmatic functions.

The contributions to this volume explore several focal issues related to the global spread of English and their implications for English language teaching, providing both theoretical and empirical perspectives on recent research and implications in educational terms. The volume is divided into three thematic sections, namely "Developments in ELF research and pedagogic implications", "Raising teachers' awareness of ELF", and "ELF and ELT practices". The book provides up-to-date perspectives on the issues, implications and repercussions that findings in ELF research can have for ELT practices. The contributors are all scholars and researchers who have long been engaged in ELF-related research, and who have undertaken operational and practical work in the field, and, as such, offer novel perspectives on the effects of EFL research on the teaching and learning of English. The volume also presents the findings of innovative projects in teacher education, involving pre- and in-service teachers, providing exemplificative good practices of possible new routes into pluralistic, ELF-aware and ELF-oriented didactic perspectives.

About two centuries after the communication by Sir Percival Pott that the "chimney sweeper disease" was a cancer and its suggestion that active compounds of soot were the causative agents, and about one century after the description of urinary bladder cancer in dye workers, an enormous number of substances have been synthesized and have probably come into contact with man. Research in cancer prevention is of primary importance, and may receive continuous support from new discoveries on cancer etiology and pathogenesis. If one accepts the multistage model of chemical carcinogenesis, one has also to accept that many events occur between the contact of carcino genic compounds and their specific targets and the development of a clinically recognizable neoplasm. Thus, animal studies become essential to elucidate the different steps by which chemical carcinogens induce neoplasia. The analysis of these steps and the comparative evaluation of experimental models is essential to an understanding of pathogenesis.
This book investigates formal characteristics and discourse functions of linguistic creativity at the level of idioms in spoken ELF as represented in the Vienna-Oxford International Corpus of English (VOICE). Building on the findings of previous ELF research, the book proposes that creativity might serve as a fundamental concept in accounting for the variation that seems to be central to describing and understanding English as a lingua franca.

Language regulation has often been approached from a top-down policy perspective, whereas this book examines regulatory practices employed by speakers in interaction. With its ethnographically informed focus on language regulation in academic English as a lingua franca (ELF), the book is a timely contribution to debates about what counts as acceptable English in ELF contexts, who can act as language expert, and when regulation is needed.
In a constantly interconnected world communication takes place beyond territorial boundaries, in networks where English works as a lingua franca. The volume explores how ELF is employed in internationally-oriented personal blogs; findings show how bloggers deploy an array of resources to their expressive and interactional aims, combining global and local communicative practices.
