What role does subjectivity play in digital culture? While the 19th century was characterized by print culture and the 20th century by broadcasting culture, we are now experiencing a new paradigm shift: digital technology has radically changed the way we produce (and consume) information, goods, values, social relationships, institutional bonds, etc. Subjects living in such a digital environment are ‘digitalizing’ themselves as well: the label ‘digital Self’ can help understand this change by establishing a parallel between subject and culture based on their common feature of being ‘digital’. Nevertheless, significant differences in this ‘being digital’ on both sides are at play, which should not be overlooked if we are to critically understand not only what a ‘digital Self’ and a ‘digital culture’ are, but also their dark sides and most problematic aspects. With this issue, our aim is to provide an interdisciplinary overview of the most problematic features of digital culture and the digital self according to contemporary debate, which might suggest new directions for future research and collaborative work.
Animality in Contemporary Italian Philosophy
This volume provides an overview of contemporary Italian philosophy from the perspective of animality. Its rationale rests on two main premises: the great topicality of both Italian contemporary philosophy (the so-called “Italian Theory”) and of the animal question (the so-called “animal turn” in the humanities and the social sciences) in the contemporary philosophical panorama. The volume not only intersects these two axes, illuminating Italian Theory through the animal question, but also proposes an original thesis: that the animal question is a central and founding issue of contemporary Italian philosophy. It combines historical-descriptive chapters with analyses of the theme in several philosophical branches, such as biopolitics, Posthumanism, Marxism, Feminism, Antispeciesism and Theology, and with original contributions by renowned authors of contemporary Italian (animal) philosophy. The volume is both historical-descriptive and speculative and is intended for a broad academic audience, embracing both Italian studies and Animal studies at all levels.

Misterioso ed estremamente eloquente, il sorriso col suo fascino ha stregato poeti, musicisti, scultori e pittori di ogni tempo, ispirando alcune delle opere più straordinarie della cultura mondiale: dalle molte rappresentazioni orientali del Buddha all’etrusco Apollo di Veio; dai ritratti in affresco dell’antichità alla ineguagliabile Gioconda, per sedurre in ne l’arte relativamente giovane della fotogra fia. Al contempo, la sua spontanea insorgenza – talora apparentemente inconsapevole, talaltra pregna della massima concentrazione raziocinante – ha incuriosito scienziati e psicologi. Solitamente viene accostato al riso, come sua forma diminutiva o contenuta. Secondo Plessner, invece, il sorriso appartiene a una specie sui generis di espressione che, proprio per la sua polivalente performatività, non ha nulla a che vedere con il signi ficato antropologico del riso e denota la straordinaria capacità dell’essere umano di allontanarsi da se stesso e assumere maschere.

Helmuth Plessner, filosofo, sociologo e studioso della natura umana, è ormai noto a tutti coloro che si interessano alla filosofia e all’antropologia filosofica dell’ultimo secolo. Il suo pensiero ha attraversato il Novecento europeo e appartiene a pieno titolo al complesso confronto tra le maggiori correnti della filosofia e le diverse esperienze del sapere scientifico. Sullo sfondo di una originale filosofia della natura, le sue osservazioni sulla realtà dell’uomo mettono in luce i tratti di un essere che è al contempo il più prossimo e il più lontano da se stesso. Un essere eccentrico, che a partire da questa posizione paradossale scopre le proprie peculiarità e, insieme, il proprio destino.
