Symmetries in Science XI

This book is a collection of reviews and essays about the recent developments in the area of Symmetries and applications of Group Theory. Contributions have been written mostly at the graduate level but some are accessible to advanced undergraduates. The book is of interest to a wide audience and covers a broad range of topics with a strong degree of thematical unity. The book is part of a Series of books on Symmetries in Science and may be compared to the published Proceedings of the Colloquia on Group Theoretical Methods in Physics. Here, however, prevails a distinguished character for presenting extended reviews on present applications to Science, not restricted to Theoretical Physics.

Topics in Mathematical Physics, General Relativity, and Cosmology in Honor of Jerzy Pleba?ski

One of modern science's most famous and controversial figures, Jerzy Plebanski was an outstanding theoretical physicist and an author of many intriguing discoveries in general relativity and quantum theory. Known for his exceptional analytic talents, explosive character, inexhaustible energy, and bohemian nights with brandy, coffee, and enormous amounts of cigarettes, he was dedicated to both science and art, producing innumerable handwritten articles - resembling monk's calligraphy - as well as a collection of oil paintings. As a collaborator but also an antagonist of Leopold Infeld's (a coauthor of Albert Einstein's), Plebanski is recognized for designing the "heavenly" and "hyper-heavenly...

Nonlinear Physics: Theory And Experiment Ii, Proceedings Of The Workshop

The theory of solitons involves a broad variety of mathematical methods and appears in many areas of physics, technology, biology, and pure and applied mathematics. In this book, emphasis is placed on both theory (considering mathematical approaches for classical and quantum nonlinear systems — both continuous and discrete) and experiment (with special discussions on high bit rate optical communications and pulse dynamics in optical materials).

Quantum Theory And Symmetries - Proceedings Of The International Symposium

This volume gives a representative survey of recent developments in relativistic and non-relativistic quantum theory, which are related to the application of symmetries in their most general sense. The corresponding mathematical notions are centered upon groups, algebras and their generalizations, and are applied in interaction with topology, differential geometry, functional analysis and related fields. Special emphasis is on results in the following areas: quantization methods, nonlinear evolution equations, foundation of quantum physics, algebraic quantum field theory, gauge and string theories, quantum information, quantum groups, discrete symmetries.

The term 'nonclassical states' refers to the quantum states that cannot be produced in the usual sources of light, such as lasers or lamps, rather than those requiring more sophisticated apparatus for their production. Theory of Non-classical States of Light describes the current status of the theory of nonclassical states of light including many new and important results as well as introductory material and the history of the subject. The authors concentrate on the most important types of nonclassical states, namely squeezed, even/odd ('Schrodinger cat') and binomial states, including their generalizations. However, a review of other types of nonclassical is also given in the introduction, and methods for generating nonclassical states on various processes of light-matter interaction, their phase-space description, and the time evolution of nonclassical states in these processes is presented in separate chapters. This contributed volume contains all of the necessary formulae and references required to gain a good understanding of the principles and current status of the field. It will provide a valuable information resource for advanced students and researchers in quantum physics.

Mathematical Physics and Stochastic Analysis

In October 1998 a conference was held in Lisbon to celebrate Ludwig Streit's 60th birthday. This book collects some of the papers presented at the conference as well as other essays contributed by the many friends and collaborators who wanted to honor Ludwig Streit's scientific career and personality. The contributions cover many aspects of contemporary mathematical physics. Of particular importance are new results on infinite-dimensional stochastic analysis and its applications to a wide range of physical domains.List of Contributors: S Albeverio, T Hida, L Accardi, I Ya Aref'eva, I V Volovich; A Daletskii, Y Kondratiev, W Karwowski, N Asai, I Kubo, H-H Kuo, J Beckers, Ph Blanchard, G F Dell...

Symmetries in Physics

This volume gives a borad overview on symmetry methods ypplied to molecular and nuclear physics, to particle physics, decay processes, and phase space dynamics. The thoroughly edited contributions should be of interest not only to scientists but also to thos that want to see how symmetry considerations are put to work in twentieth century physics.

Coherent Dynamics of Complex Quantum Systems

Coherent Dynamics of Complex Quantum Systems is aimed at senior-level undergraduate students in the areas of atomic, molecular, and laser physics, physical chemistry, quantum optics and quantum informatics. It should help them put particular problems in these fields into a broader scientific context and thereby take advantage of the well-elaborated technique of the adjacent fields.

Recent Developments in Quantum Optics

This volume is composed of papers (invited and contributed) presented at the International Conference on Coherence and Quantum Optics held at the University of Hyderabad January 5-January 10, 1991. It has been organized by Professor Girish Agarwal and his colleagues at the School of Physics, University of Hyderabad, Hyder abad, India under partial support from the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, International Center for Theoretical Physics, Trieste, Italy and the National Science Foundation, USA. Without the untiring efforts of Prof. Girish Agarwal and the members of his quantum office group, the Conference and the present volume would not have been possible. Some ...
