Diabetes

Diabetes: Oxidative Stress and Dietary Antioxidants, Second Edition, builds on the success of the first edition, covering updated research on the science of oxidative stress in diabetes and the potentially therapeutic usage of natural antioxidants in the diet and food matrix. The processes within the science of oxidative stress are not described in isolation, but rather in concert with other processes, such as apoptosis, cell signaling and receptor mediated responses. This approach recognizes that diseases are often multifactorial and oxidative stress is a single component of this. Since the publication of the first edition, the science of oxidative stress and free radical biology continues ...

Handbook of Nutrition, Diet, and the Eye

The Handbook of Nutrition, Diet and the Eye is the first book to thoroughly address common features and etiological factors in how dietary and nutritional factors affect the eye. The ocular system is perhaps one of the least studied organs in diet and nutrition, yet the consequences of vision loss can be devastating. One of the biggest contributors to complete vision loss in the western hemisphere is diabetes, precipitated by metabolic syndrome. In some developing countries, micronutrient deficiencies are major contributory factors to impaired vision. However, there are a range of ocular defects that have either their origin in nutritional deficiencies or excess or have been shown to respond...

Diabetes

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is the leading cause of acquired blindness in working age adults worldwide. Biochemical changes in DR contribute to both the microscopic structural and functional changes in the retina. All these alterations result in macroscopic retinal damage that can be assessed by funduscopy. The overproduction of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the mitochondria is considered a causal link between elevated glucose and biochemical abnormalities in the pathophysiology of DR. Moreover, oxidatively induced pathways also seem to provide positive feedback to ROS production, resulting in a vicious cycle. ROS can directly damage lipids, proteins and DNA, leading to cell death. To make the situation worse, antioxidant defenses are also impaired in diabetes. Otherwise, ROS are involved in the production of inflammatory cytokines and growth factors such as interleukins or vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). In addition, ROS not only contribute to the development of DR, but also play a role in its progression when the hyperglycemic insult is controlled. This phenomenon is called metabolic memory.

This book highlights the role and mechanism of different metal nanocomposites toward oxidative stress-induced metabolic disorders including metabolic pathways affected by oxidative stress and related pathophysiology. The book includes an illustrative discussion about the methods of synthesis, characterization, and biomedical applications of metal nanocomposites. It focuses on the therapeutic approaches for metabolic disorders due to oxidative stress by nano delivery systems. Moreover, the book includes chapters on nanotherapeutic approaches toward different diseases, including diabetes mellitus, obesity, cardiovascular disorders, cancers, and neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's di...

Alimentació i nutrició a Catalunya: industrials, productors i científics

This book provides in-depth coverage of the latest research and development activities concerning innovative wind energy technologies intended to replace fossil fuels on an economical basis. A characteristic feature of the various conversion concepts discussed is the use of tethered flying devices to substantially reduce the material consumption per installed unit and to access wind energy at higher altitudes, where the wind is more consistent. The introductory chapter describes the emergence and economic dimension of airborne wind energy. Focusing on “Fundamentals, Modeling & Simulation”, Part I includes six contributions that describe quasi-steady as well as dynamic models and simulati...

Clinical Decisions in Glaucoma

This text provides a practical and expert problem-solving approach to the diagnosis and management of the glaucoma patient. The authors place emphasis on an approach to chronic, year-in, year-out care of the glaucoma patient - one of the most challenging management issues of the general ophthalmologists' practice. The first section of the book reviews the differential diagnosis of the patients who present with signs and symptoms suggestive of glaucoma, such as elevated pressure, abnormal optic nerve head, abnormal visual field and abnormal anterior chamber angle. The second section focuses on the chronic management of glaucoma. The authors describe the thought process/clinical decisions used to formulate and monitor treatment. In particular, they describe: how to determine the vigour with which to treat and monitor the individual patient; and how to determine if treatment is adequate and/or successful.

Crustal Magmatic System Evolution

A comprehensive picture of the architecture of crustal magmatic systems The composition of igneous rocks – their minerals, melts, and fluids – reveals the physical and chemical conditions under which magmas form, evolve, interact, and move from the Earth’s mantle through the crust. These magma dynamics affect processes on the surface including crustal growth and eruptive behaviour of volcanoes. Crustal Magmatic System Evolution: Anatomy, Architecture, and Physico-Chemical Processes uses analytical, experimental, and numerical approaches to explore the diversity of crustal processes from magma differentiation and assimilation to eruption at the surface. Volume highlights include: Physic...
