Education, Space and Urban Planning
This book examines a range of practical developments that are happening in education as conducted in urban settings across different scales. It contains insights that draw upon the fields of urban planning/urbanism, geography, architecture, education and pedagogy. It brings together current thinking and practical experience from German and international perspectives. This discussion is organised in four segments: schools and the neighbourhood; education and the neighbourhood; education and the city and finally, education and the region. Contributors cover a wide range of contemporary and significant socio-political aspects of education over the last decade. They reinforce emergent thinking that space and its urban context are important dimensions of education. This book also underscores the need for more research in the relationships between education and urban development itself. Current urban planning does not fully connect our understanding in education with what we know in the spatial and planning sciences. Accordingly, this release is an early attempt to bring together a growing body of integrated and interdisciplinary reflection on education theory and practice.
Politics of (Dis)Integration

Internment Refugee Camps
How did and does the fate of refugees unfold in internment camps? The contributors to this book facilitate an extensive engagement with the organized, state led, and forced placement of refugees in the past and present. They show the parallels and differences between the practices and types of internment in different countries – while considering the specific historical contexts. Moreover, they highlight the nexus of relationships and agencies which constitute the camps in question as transitory spaces. The contributions consist of analyses of local phenomena or case studies as well as comparative engagements from an international and/or historical perspective.
Postphenomenology and Technologies within Educational Settings
Technologies such as tablets, plagiarism software, and learning videos are now an important part of teaching and learning around the world. The underlying human-technology relations that shape modern educational settings have a decisive influence on what education is and will be in the future. This volume applies the analytical tools of postphenomenology to the context of education. In three sections, the contributors present empirical evidence on the use of technology in schools, show conceptual convergences with current theories relevant to education and training, and challenge and reframe the technologically situated subject as the goal of education in relation to technology. This collection, edited by Markus Bohlmann and Patrizia Breil, opens up the research field of postphenomenology to the broad field of educational technologies. Practicing the Family
How »family« is construed on a material and discursive level has gained increasing interest among educational and social work professionals. The contributors to this volume address that question in relation to the diverse everyday practices of »doing family« by its heterogeneous members. The contributions build a transdisciplinary bridge between research on family life on the one hand and research on the formatting of family in welfare state contexts on the other. Fundamental to this is a decentred and fluid understanding of family that conceives itself as a contested set of relational activities in people's everyday lives that are socially recognized as »familial«.
Weaving the Camp
This book offers a socio-spatial analysis of a refugee camp in southwestern Uganda. Based on qualitative research with a multi-method approach the author shows how refugees are central actors in the operation and becoming of a camp. Not only do they crucially contribute to its social, micro-economic, and material realization but they also incrementally rearrange the camp space by acts of constant adaptation in order to make it work for its inhabitants. By means of social interaction, infrastructuring, translation, movement and material improvisation they navigate daily life in the semi-constricted and highly precarious space of the refugee protection regime and carve out its social and material landscape. Thus, this study challenges static understandings of camps and restricted conditions and puts forward theoretical implications for the rethinking and reassessment of agency in such contexts by calling for closer attention to ordinary practices.

Pädagogische Institutionen des Jugendalters in der Krise
Der Band stellt die Frage nach den Konstitutionsbedingungen von pädagogischen Institutionen als zentrale Mechanismen der (formalen) Durchsetzung der Jugendphase ins Zentrum. Dabei rücken Momente des Auseinanderdriftens von (sozial-)pädagogischen Institutionalisierungen und sich wandelnden Praktiken von Jugend in den Fokus und es wird ausgelotet, wann und in welcher Form sich darin Krisen von Institutionen des Jugendalters abzeichnen und diese dazu herausfordern, sich neu zu positionieren. Ziel ist es, die Institutionenperspektive innerhalb der erziehungswissenschaftlichen Jugendforschung zu schärfen und mit ihr diagnostizierte Krisen offenzulegen, sodass sowohl ‚die‘ Jugend und ihre krisenhaften Institutionen als auch die Krise der Institutionen und (ihre) Jugend klarer konturiert werden (können).
