This book provides a state-of-the-art overview of the combined use of imaging modalities to obtain important functional and morphological information on intravascular disease and enhance disease detection. It discusses the integration of intravascular ultrasound (IVUS, intravascular optical coherence tomography (OCT), intravascular photoacoustic imaging (IVPA) and acoustic radiation force optical coherence elastography (ARF-OCE), and introduces the integration of multimodality imaging systems, such as IR and florescence. It includes the latest research advances and numerous imaging photos to offer readers insights into current intravascular applications. It is a valuable resource for students, scientists and physicians wanting to gain a deeper understanding of multimodality imaging tools.

Given that for centuries, the standard tool to understand diseases in tissues was the microscope and that its major limitation was that only excised tissue could be used, recent technology now permits the examination of diseased tissue in vivo. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) has promising potential when applied to coronary artery disease. OCT has the capability to identify coronary plaque and to distinguish between plaques that are stable and unstable. If the plaques are stable then OCT can direct percutaneous intervention (angioplasty or stenting). Optical coherence tomography is a light-based imaging technology that allows for very high resolution imaging in biological tissues. It has ...

Optical Coherence Tomography

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is an imaging technology that provides high resolution cross-sectional images in many fields of medicine and engineering. OCT images are constructed by measuring the intensity of reflected or back scattered light that is scanned across the tissue and material. This book aims to provide readers with comprehensive information of OCT in ophthalmology, oncology, atherosclerosis and engineering.

Optical Coherence Tomography guided Laser-Cochleostomy

Despite the high precision of laser, it remains challenging to control the laser-bone ablation without injuring the underlying critical structures. Providing an axial resolution on micrometre scale, OCT is a promising candidate for imaging microstructures beneath the bone surface and monitoring the ablation process. In this work, a bridge connecting these two technologies is established. A closed-loop control of laser-bone ablation under the monitoring with OCT has been successfully realised.

Design and Construciton of a Prototype Multispectral Fluorescence Guidance System for Use in Brain Cancer Treatment

In this work, the concept of an intra-operative multispectral fluorescence guidance (MFG) system was implemented. The photonic-system design was tuned by literature studies, previous experiments, and clinical requirements. The resultant MFG system could capture spectrally resolved fluorescence image at 4 wavelengths in the visible spectrum using a thermo-electrically cooled CCD, as well as fluorescence spectra from a small, localized area (diameter $\le$ 1mm) of the object using a fiber-optically coupled spectrograph, covering from 480nm to 720nm. The instrument had a long working distance of 55 to 60cm, a field of view of 3.3cm x 2.5cm, a depth of focus larger than 1cm, and lateral spatial ...
