Pain is a health issue that warrants significant attention and has an immense impact on global healthcare systems. This book focuses on pain, particularly on its management, by providing fresh perspectives and novel insights, while at the same time examining related topics that have often been overlooked. Given that there is no permanent cure for pain, the book primarily serves as an update to the existing knowledge. Topics covered include the biochemical pathways of pain as well as pharmaceutical and clinical management of pain to ensure health and wellbeing.
Lipids are one of the most important biomolecules and, given their relationship with several non-communicable diseases at large, this makes them significant to be studied both biochemically and clinically. As the title of the book suggests, apolipoproteins, triglycerides, and cholesterol are focused herein with fresh perspectives and novel insights, while certain overlooked areas are given their due attention. Although these three terms are very broad, the book aims at primarily serving as an update to existing knowledge. It is hoped that the readers will benefit from this book in advancing their understanding about the biochemical pathways, clinical applications, and remedial action in terms of ensuring health and wellbeing, as well as in identifying gaps that would help set the directions of scientific investigations in the future.
Pseudocereals, belonging to the genus Amaranthus, have been cultivated for their grains for 8,000 years or more. The grain was a staple food of the Aztecs and was also considered an integral part of Aztec religious ceremonies. The book primarily focuses on the nutrient properties of amaranth and expresses its viewpoint in considering this crop as a remedy for many nutrient deficiencies and curbing food insecurity. The functional properties of the grain are immense and it is clear that the crop would be a valuable agricultural product around the world.
From time immemorial fermented foods have undoubtedly contributed to the progress of modern societies. Historically, ferments have been present in virtually all human cultures worldwide, and nowadays natives from many ancient cultures still conduct a wide variety of food fermentations using deep-rooted recipes and processes. Within the last four centuries, scientific research has started to unravel many aspects of the biological process behind fermentations, which has contributed to the improvement of many industrial processes. During our journey in the research field, we have always been attracted to the development of scientific research around fermentations, especially autochthonous ferments: a natural repository of novel biomolecules and biological processes that will positively impact on many application fields from health, to food, to materials.
Superfood is a food that contains active ingredients or important nutrients at extremely high levels. Protective effects of superfoods on diseases have been remarked. Recently, several foods such as camu camu, chia seeds and goji berries are well known, and their trade has been rapidly increasing in the past 10 years. The purpose of this book is the development of a novel concept of superfoods and diet-containing superfoods. In the chapters, researchers have introduced the active components of superfoods and diets using such foods. Superfoods derived from fish and by-products of beer brewing are also introduced. Moreover, the procedure of bio-accessibility is also considered. I expect that the readers understand this novel concept of superfoods.
Regional anesthesia has progressively evolved and currently occupies a predominant place in our daily practice. The development of skills for the safe practice of regional anesthesia requires in-depth knowledge of anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, and the pathology of each patient candidate to receive some type of regional block, as well as special and prolonged training beyond residence, particularly in this era of the COVID-19 pandemic, during which the training of thousands of anesthesiology residents has been impaired. Undoubtedly, the benefits of regional anesthesia techniques are enormous, as are their complications. Countless guidelines for regional anesthesia have been described based on the classic anatomical recommendations, the search for paresthesias, neurostimulation, and medical images. The introduction of ultrasound guidance and the rational use of local anesthetics and their adjuvants have favorably revolutionized regional anesthesia, making it safer and more effective. This book addresses several contemporary topics in regional anesthesia in a variety of interesting clinical settings with practical importance.
Diabetes is a global pandemic where many remedies have been recommended as means of combating the prevalence of this disease. However, dietary control appears to be more effective than others. This book focuses on interventions concerning glycemic control, the oxidative stress-based occurrence of the disease and its prevention, as well as novel remedies. While many books have been published recently on this aspect, the book aims to serve as an update to the scientific community, as well as to those who have been adversely affected by the disease. There are many unexplored territories when it comes to diabetes, and it is hoped that this publication will open up new avenues of successfully curbing its occurrence.
Palm oil production is one of the most developed and noteworthy industries in the world, leading to rapid economic growth in countries where the industry has been established. Currently, palm oil is the world's leader in the vegetable oil industry with a yearly production and consumption of approximately 45.3 million tons, which almost covers 60% of the global trade of vegetable oils in the international market. Along these lines, it is expected that the global demand for palm oil will be doubled by 2020. The book focuses on various aspects of palm oil production, primarily, the environmental aspects, its application as an animal feed, chemical and nutritional properties of the oil, and technical aspects of enhancing the efficacy of production.
Antioxidants are one of the most sought-after biological compounds of interest to both scientific and nonscientific communities. The term gained popularity with the advent of identifying these compounds as having the ability to maintain health and wellness by combating against pathways leading to non-communicable diseases. This book covers several aspects of antioxidants—mechanisms of action, assays of measuring potency, sources, and even methods of isolation and identification. While it may seem these aspects have been covered in depth in several publications before this, this book intends to be positioned as an update, especially since the area of antioxidant research is as dynamic as ever. There are several chapters that might be of interest to health buffs, specifically those who are quite keen on maintaining health and wellness.
Among the world's myriad cultures and their associated calendars, the idea of a "New Year" is relative and hardly specifies a universal celebration or even a universal point in time. Ways of celebrating the New Year range from the observances of religious rituals and superstitions to social gatherings featuring particular foods, music, dancing, noisemaking, fireworks and drinking. This first encyclopedia devoted exclusively to the New Year includes 320 entries that give a global perspective on the New Year, beyond its traditional Western associations with Christmas. National or regional entries detail the principal traditions and customs of 130 countries, while 27 entries discuss major calendar systems in current use or of significant historical interest. The remaining entries cover a wide variety of subjects including literary works, movies, and television specials; the customs of specific ethnic groups; universal customs such as toasting and drinking; football bowl games and parades; and the New Year celebrations at the White House and the Vatican.
