They Came By Ship: The Stories of the Calitrani Immigrants in America is the product of the Internet Age which brought together people researching their roots to their ancestral town of Calitri in Southern Italy. They came to know one another and, in many cases, rekindled old friendships and discovered distant relatives in second and third cousins. They began sharing stories on the Net of the good old days, recalling neighborhoods where their parents and grandparents had settled after emigrating from Italy. These communities included Brooklyn, New Rochelle, Tarrytown, Dobbs Ferry, Batavia, Mount Vernon in New York; Montclair, Paterson, Newark in New Jersey; Stamford, Bridgeport, Torrington i...
The first English language book to cover the full scope of modern Italy, from its official birth to today, "The Force of Destiny" is a brilliant and comprehensive study and a frightening example of how easily nation-building and nationalism can slip toward authoritarianism and war.
In today's society, the livestock industry is often blamed for various global issues, and the production of meat and cured meats have been stigmatized as a significant contributor. However, it is crucial to provide accurate information on these matters. Environmental journalist Andrea Bertaglio shares the perspectives of breeders, producers, and omnivorous individuals to remind the public that farming is not always as portrayed in some animal rights videos on the internet and television. Though the industry does have its challenges, it is essential to present a balanced view to avoid confusion and misinformation.
PRESERVING OUR HISTORY takes a serious look into the history ofthe immigrants from the town of Calitri, Italy. These immigrants broughtwith them a strong sense of community and kinship. While gradually assimilatinginto their new environs, newcomers left paper trails of documentsand information, some fortunately still treasured and preserved bydescendents, many others stored in various archival institutes waiting tobe discovered and added to known facts.
This book presents recent research advances on achieving seamless interoperability across all layers of communication channels in the context of emergency management and crisis response. It includes the outcomes of intensive discussions during the Workshop “Command, Control and Sensor Systems in Emergency Management” (EU C2-SENSE), which was held in Milan (Italy) from 4 to 6 July 2017. Major topics covered include analyses and practical guidelines for the development of physical and sensor layers; data analysis, visualization and management; and system integration. Moreover, certification guidelines and organizational interoperability issues are addressed. The book offers a valuable resource, both in the form of hands-on guidelines for the effective implementation of novel solutions in information technologies (IT) for civil protection applications, and as a basis for further research.
Data Warehousing and Knowledge Discovery have been widely accepted as key te- nologies for enterprises and organizations as a means of improving their abilities in data analysis, decision support, and the automatic extraction of knowledge from data. With the exponentially growing amount of information to be included in the decision making process, the data to be processed is becoming more and more complex in both structure and semantics. Consequently, the process of retrieval and knowledge disc- ery from this huge amount of heterogeneous complex data constitutes the reality check for research in the area. During the past few years, the International Conference on Data Warehousing and Knowled...
The use of cardiac implantable electronic devices (CIEDs) has substantially increased in the last decades. They have a significant impact on reducing morbidity and mortality of patients suffering from cardiac arrhythmias and heart failure. Several developments of technical issues have appeared over recent years to improve safety and efficacy. However, their role in daily clinical practice is still unclear. For instance, different leadless technologies, such as leadless pacemakers, subcutaneous defibrillators or wearables are only partly or not included in the current guideline recommendations. There are also several attempts to improve clinical response to cardiac resynchronization therapy w...
Throughout Italy's history, prophetic voices-poets, painters, philosophers-have bolstered the struggle for social and political emancipation. These voices denounced the vices of compatriots and urged them toward redemption. They gave meaning to suffering, helping to prevent moral surrender; they provided support, with pathos and anger, which set into motion the moral imagination, culminating in redemption and freedom. While the fascist regime attempted to enlist Mazzini and the prophets of the Risorgimento in support of its ideology, the most perceptive anti-fascist intellectual and political leaders composed eloquent prophetic pages to sustain the resistance against the totalitarian regime. By the end of the 1960s, no prophet of social emancipation has been able to move the consciences of the Italians. In this Italian story, then, is our story, the world's story, inspiration for social and political emancipation everywhere.
