Translanguaging in Multilingual English Classrooms
This book is the first to apply the theory of translanguaging to multilingual classrooms in an Asian context, offering strategies for teaching specific grammatical and comprehension skills to students struggling to read in English. It also enriches the methodology of coding bilingual transcripts with ideas resulting from a detailed analysis of a large and rich data set. Lastly, the author discusses growth areas in the emerging field of translanguaging and challenges for teachers implementing a translanguaging approach in a superdiverse classroom.
Biliteracy and Globalization
This book analyzes how the urban disadvantaged in the city of New Delhi learn English. Using qualitative methods the author discusses the pedagogy, texts and contexts in which biliteracy occurs and links English language teaching and learning in India with the broader social and economic processes of globalization in a developing country. The study is situated in a government school, a site where classrooms have rarely been qualitatively described, and where the Three Language Formula (TLF) is being fundamentally transformed due to increasing demand from the community for earlier access to the linguistic capital of English. Through research conducted in a call centre the author also shows what the requirements of new workplaces are and how government schools are trying to meet this demand.

Singapore has been taken by many researchers as a fascinating living language policy and planning laboratory. Language and education policy in Singapore has been pivotal not only to the establishment and growth of schooling, but to the very project of nation building. Since their inception, ‘mother tongue’ policies have been established with two explicit goals. Firstly there is the development and training of human and intellectual capital for the expansion and networking of a Singaporean service and information economy. Secondly there is the maintenance of cultural heritage and values as a means for social cohesion and, indeed, the maintenance of community and regional social capital. These tasks have been fraught with tension and contradiction, both in relation to the conditions of rapid cultural, economic and political change in Asia and globally, but as well because of the tensions between the so called ‘world language English’ and Singapore’s three other official languages, Tamil, Malay and Mandarin. This has been complicated, of course, by the challenges of vibrant regional dialects and the emergence of Singlish as a powerful medium of community life.

The life depicted in this book covers his upbringing and childhood in pre-Independent India, as well as a pioneer Indian to join Tea Estates in British-owned Tea gardens in the Dooars West Bengal as far back as in 1955. Tea Planter meant the Managerial Staff of Tea Estates, viz, the Visiting Agent, the Superintendent, Senior Managers, Managers, and Assistant Managers in British- owned Tea Estates in North East India. It was interesting to watch how the British colleagues accepted their Indian counterparts in the Field and more so in Planters Clubs, which were their Home away from Home 6000 miles away.The book takes his readers through the U.K. and USA as well as Far East as a Tourist, especially through Hongkong and finally to Japan, a very advanced Asian country which is interesting and informative. Finally, the author's entry into owning a Tea Estate and Company in collaboration with his son and their experiences thereafter.
