At the time of this writing little was known of the life of James White, whose early passing brought to the forefront the well deserved respect and admiration of his wife, Ellen G. White. "To provide an interesting, accurate, and enlightening account of James White," Virgil Robinson was asked to dig into the early records and write this volume. "This well written account, constructed from the documents of the time, makes that noble, yet very human man, live. May the knowledge of his dedication, his vision, his sacrifice, and his innate confidence in the triumph of the Church, inspire the generation who must carry to its conclusion the work he, under the leading of God's Spirit, began so well." -Arthur L. White
This is the story of a Scottish girl, Mary Slessor, which took place in the late 1800's in West Africa. Mary wanted to be like the famous explorer and missionary, Dr. David Livingstone. Among other hardships, she settled tribal wars by sheer daring, and single-handedly defied tribal customs of killing twin babies and slaughtering women and children. Mary was sometimes misunderstood, sometimes hated and ignored--but in the end, she was Ma, the loved.
Several hundred years after the apostle John wrote of a beautiful woman facing a fierce dragon in the last book of the Bible, the Waldenses fled from before Satan and his followers to find a refuge in the wilderness. Here is the story of the true church of Jesus, branded as heretics and pursued relentlessly in a Holy War to extinguish by intrigue, lies, betrayal and persecution, those keeping the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus.
Transcribed directly from the author's journal Resolved to Evolve is a book of change and personal evolution. One of eight children raised by a single mother on welfare, surrounded by alcohol and drug abuse, the author and his siblings committed themselves to break the cycle, and free themselves from the poverty of their surroundings. With the inspiration of his mother, and his brothers and sisters the author created a journal of resolutions he committed to live his life by, confident in their transformative power to push him forward and compel him to evolve. Meant to be read from cover to cover without pause, it is a perfect complement to books like: The Secret, Think & Grow Rich, Rich Dad Poor Dad, 4-Hour Work Week, and How to Win Friends and Influence People. Resolved to Evolve will always stand as a testament to the fact that we should never allow a lack of money or a lack of support to stop us from challenging ourselves to do something meaningful and worthwhile with our lives no matter the circumstance we find ourselves in; make a firm decision to evolve.
Seeking to extend existing scholarship on gender and colonialism and on women and American religion, this cross-cultural study examines the work of American missionary women in South Asia at several levels. A primary concern of the study is to historicize the interventions of these women and situate them within the dual contexts of the sending society and the receiving culture. It focuses on missionaries Isabella Thoburn and Ida Scudder, who founded some of the premier women's colleges and hospitals in British colonial India. The book also draws upon the narratives and reminiscences of South Asian women, now in their seventies, who attended such institutions in the 1940s, and whose voices texture our understanding of American women's missionary work in "Other" cultures.
