Die Zeitzeugin, Musikerin und Antifaschistin Esther Bejarano (1924–2021) wurde mit 18 Jahren nach Auschwitz deportiert. Sie musste Akkordeon im berüchtigten »Auschwitzer Mädchenorchester« spielen, kam später in das KZ Ravensbrück und floh bei Kriegsende während eines Todesmarschs. Bis zu ihrem Lebensende kämpfte sie gegen die deutsche Geschichtsvergessenheit an. Benet Lehmann hat viele Gespräche mit ihr geführt. Als Mitglied der letzten Generation, die noch unmittelbar mit Zeitzeug*innen sprechen kann, begibt sich Benet Lehmann auf die Spuren ihres Lebens mithilfe aktueller Forschung und im Licht gesellschaftlicher Entwicklungen. Welche Rolle spielt das Erbe der Zeitzeugenschaft heute noch? Was heißt es, Erinnerungskulturen in einer postmigrantischen Gesellschaft miteinander in Beziehung zu setzen? Wer erinnert an wen und warum? Und vor allem: Hilft Erinnerungskultur gegen Antisemitismus und Rassismus?

Über die Restitution von geraubten Kulturgütern bis hin zu postkolonialen Identitätsdebatten hat die Kolonialgeschichte in den vergangenen Jahren intensive gesellschaftliche Debatten befeuert. Auslöser sind häufig lokale Konflikte über Straßennamen, Denkmäler und Museumsausstellungen. Dies gilt auch für Bremen, einstiger Wegbereiter des offiziellen deutschen Kolonialreichs und Zentrum der Kolonialrevisionisten. Seit den 1970er Jahren ist die Stadt führend in der Aufarbeitung ihrer kolonialen Vergangenheit. Dieses anregende Lesebuch stellt Schlüsselakteure, Orte und Institutionen dieser Entwicklung vor und wirft ein Schlaglicht auf die deutsche (post-) koloniale Geschichte.
Koloniales Erbe in Museen
Mit dem Koalitionsvertrag von 2018 wurde das koloniale Erbe als Teil der deutschen Geschichte anerkannt. In einem Europa, in dem Nachfahren einstiger Kolonialmächte zusammen mit Menschen aus ehemals kolonisierten Ländern leben, gibt es sehr verschiedene Blicke in die Vergangenheit - geeint jedoch im Wunsch nach gesellschaftlichen Grundwerten in der Gegenwart. Daraus ergeben sich zentrale Fragen für die postkoloniale Museologie: Wie geht man mit Sammlungsgut aus kolonialen Kontexten um? Welche Erinnerungspolitik soll vertreten und wie kann struktureller Rassismus abgebaut werden? Anna Greve führt zur Beantwortung dieser Fragen erstmals die Kritische Weißseinsforschung mit ihren Begriffen und Methoden in die praktische Museumsarbeit ein.

Victims and Perpetrators: 1933-1945
This volume examines the politics of history and memory in Germany today through a review and analysis of seminal developments in the current discourse on 1933 – 1945. An interdisplicinary work, this book examines questions of representing the past from the perspective of literary studies, social psychology, film studies, history, and cultural studies. Themes include transgenerational memory and remembrance, the air war and German literature, commemoration and silences, transnational reconciliation, and historical consciousness in the German present. The collected essays make clear that as the current discourse contributes toward an historically informed, differentiated understanding of individuals’ roles in the Third Reich and World War Two, victim and perpetrator identities cannot be defined as exclusive from one another. The discourse emphasizes personal over collective experience and answers questions of responsibility and guilt on the individual level.
The Blind Spot
In the nineteenth and early twentieth century, the Hanseatic city of Bremen was a flourishing centre of rapidly growing international trade, profiting from colonial expansion and overseas migration. These global relations also left their traces in the Kunstverein in Bremen. Many works which were acquired by the museum during the colonial period reflect stereotypes of the foreign and exotic. The authors trace these colonial blind spots in the collection of the Kunsthalle Bremen. They examine the history of the Kunstverein in Bremen within the context of the city's trade and global connections and investigate the colonial implications of works by, amongst others, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Emil Nolde and Fritz Behn. These European perspectives are set in dialogue with works by modern and contemporary artists from the African and Asian continent. Thus, the book not only enables a postcolonial perspective on the collection of the Kunsthalle Bremen, but also on early modern art in general.
