This volume focuses on the broad pattern of increasing biodiversity through time, and recurrent events of minor and major ecosphere reorganization. Intense scrutiny is devoted to the pattern of physical (including isotopic), sedimentary and biotic circumstances through the time intervals during which life crises occurred. These events affected terrestrial, lacustrine and estuarine ecosystems, locally and globally, but have affected continental shelf ecosystems and even deep ocean ecosystems. The pattern of these events is the backdrop against which modelling the pattern of future environmental change needs to be evaluated.
This book presents a compilation of recent scientific discoveries in the field of Earth sciences from Mesozoic rocks of the Junggar Basin, China. The Triassic and Jurassic strata of this basin are particularly important because they were deposited in a continental environment inside, or close to, the Arctic Circle. The successions of the Junggar Basin therefore provide a rare snapshot of a high-latitude seasonal continental ecosystem, at a time when dinosaurs roamed the Earth. The research papers within this volume cover a range of topics, spanning the fields of palaeontology, palaeogeography, sedimentology and geochemistry, and include studies from episodes of marked environmental perturbation, including the end-Triassic mass extinction (c. 201 Ma) and the Toarcian Oceanic Anoxic Event (c. 183 Ma). The scientific advances documented here contribute to the understanding of Mesozoic high-latitude continental environments, and are expected to lead to follow-up studies, facilitating further interdisciplinary collaborations in the future.
Despite their global importance, little is known about the few existing examples of impacts into marine environments and icy targets. They are among the least understood and studied parts of impact crater geology. The icy impacts are also of great importance in understanding the developments of the outer planets and their satellites such as Mars or Europa. Furthermore, the impact mechanisms, crater formation and collapse, melt production and the ejecta distribution are scarcely known for impact on targets other than the "classical" solid silicates of the continental crust. The 35th International Meeting of Sedimentology supported by the International Association of Sedimentologists is an annual conference with global impact among the community of sedimentary geologists. Original scheduled at June 2020, the 35 the IAS Meeting of Sedimentology was postponed to June 21-25, 2021, and will be held virtually.
