This volume presents important results of the Collaborative Research Center (Sonderforschungsbereich) "Situated Artificial Communicators," which was funded by grants from the German Research Foundation (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft) for more than twelve years. The contributions focus on different aspects of human-human and human-machine interaction in situations which closely model everyday workplace demands. The authors are linguists, psycho- und neurolinguists, psychologists and computer scientists at Bielefeld University. They jointly tackle questions of information processing in task-oriented communication. The role of key notions such as context, integration (of multimodal information), reference, coherence, and robustness is explored in great depth. Some remarkable findings and recurrent phenomena reveal that communication is, to a large extent, a matter of joint activity. The interdisciplinary approach integrates theory, description and experimentation with simulation and evaluation.
This text identifies grammatical constraints on adverbs in multiple areas of language, from morpho-syntax to prosody to semantics. A novel syntactic adverb hierarchy is proposed to explain the distribution of multi-adverb constructions, one which has just five distinct classes. The status of “adverb” as a unique lexical category is also investigated. Readers will learn that, unlike adjectives, adverb ordering restrictions are not predictable based on a single conceptual factor like subjectivity. This book also connects the ordering preferences of adverbs to the meaning and usage of each class of adverbs, as well speaker variation relating to adverb form and pronunciation. Although the book focuses primarily on data from the English language, its findings are predicted to hold cross-linguistically, and would be useful to any linguistic researcher studying adverb distribution.

The miracle of children's language development and the joy of expressive language on the one hand and the vulnerability of language and the sorrow and grief caused by its distortion or even loss in people with aphasia or dementia on the other hand show us the inseparability of emotion and language in its extremes. Although the ‘emotional turn’ promised a paradigmatic shift from a rationalistic towards an emotion-integrating conceptualization of language, hardly any interdisciplinary research has focused on the interplay between emotion and language. The present book covers the wide range of work on Emotion in Language with contributions from numerous disciplines in the three areas of Theory, Research, and Application. With contributions both from well-known pioneers in the area of this topic as well as from young scientists, the book offers a broad range of perspectives from linguistics and language development to neurology, psychology and developmental neuropsychology and to the fields of philosophy and phenomenology.
Die Perzeption prosodischer Merkmale, wie z.B. Melodieverlauf, Rhythmus, Akzentuierung etc., ist ein für die Sprechwissenschaft wesentlicher Untersuchungsgegenstand. Die Wahrnehmung der Prosodie ist allerdings empirisch nur schwer zu erforschen, denn dem messbaren akustischen Signal steht nicht unmittelbar ein internes psychisches „Gegenstück“ gegenüber. Außerdem beeinflusst das Umfeld den Wahrnehmungsprozess schon auf einer sehr niedrigen Verarbeitungsstufe. Wieland Kranich vermittelt eine Übersicht über die Fülle der vorliegenden, teils widersprüchlichen Befunde und stellt eigene Experimentalreihen zu ausgewählten Aspekten der Prosodieperzeption vor. Er zeigt dabei, dass die Verbindung von Form- und Funktionsmerkmalen der Prosodie zentral ist und dass diese schon auf elementarer Stufe das Wahrnehmungsresultat beeinflusst.
