De openbare bibliotheken namen veel toegangsdrempels weg. Maar sinds enkele jaren hebben we dankzij digitalisering en internet vanuit de huiskamer toegang tot een overweldigend en divers informatieaanbod. Hoezeer zal de burger de openbare bibliotheek in de toekomst nog nodig hebben om zich te informeren en literair en cultureel te verrijken? In zijn oratie betoogt Huysmans dat de normatieve grondslagen van het bibliotheekwerk - met name het bieden van vrije toegang tot een pluriform en kwalitatief hoogstaand informatief en cultureel aanbod - ook in het internettijdperk actueel zullen blijven.
