Artificial Intelligence applications build on a rich and proven theoretical background to provide solutions to a wide range of real life problems. The ever expanding abundance of information and computing power enables researchers and users to tackle higly interesting issues for the first time, such as applications providing personalized access and interactivity to multimodal information based on preferences and semantic concepts or human-machine interface systems utilizing information on the affective state of the user. The purpose of the 3rd IFIP Conference on Artificial Intelligence Applications and Innovations (AIAI) is to bring together researchers, engineers, and practitioners interested in the technical advances and business and industrial applications of intelligent systems. This two-volume set constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 11th International Conference on Industrial and Engineering Applications of Artificial Intelligence and Expert Systems, IEA/AIE-98, held in Benicassim, Castellon, Spain, in June 1998.The two volumes present a total of 187 revised full papers selected from 291 submissions. ITS 2000 is the fifth international conference on Intelligent Tutoring Systems. The preceding conferences were organized in Montreal in 1988, 1992, and 1996. These conferences were so strongly supported by the international community that it was decided to hold them every two years. ITS’98 was organized by Carol Redfield and Valerie Shute and held in San Antonio, Texas. The program committee included members from 13 countries. On behalf of the AH 2004 Program Committee, we were pleased to welcome att- dees to Eindhoven for the 3rd International Conference on Adaptive Hypermedia and Adaptive Web-Based Systems. Similar to previous years, the number of research groups involved in research and innovative applications of personalization and adaptation functionalities has continued to grow, resulting in a further increase of 33% in the number of papers submitted to the conference, compared to the previous conference.
