General inspection of a role performed in the cell by RNAs allows us to distinguish three major groups of transcripts: I. protein-coding mRNAs, II. non-coding housekeeping and III. regulatory RNAs. The housekeeping RNAs include RNA classes that are generally, constitutively expressed and whose presence is required for normal function and viability of the cells. In May 2002 a number of about 20 scientists from various disciplines were invited by the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities to participate in an interdisciplinary workshop on structures and structure generating processes. The biopharmaceutical market has come along way since 1982 when the first biopharmaceutical product, recombinant human insulin, was launched. Over 120 such products are currently being marketed around the world including nine blockbuster drugs. The global market for biopharmaceuticals, which is currently valued at US$41 billion, has been growing at an impressive compound annual growth rate of 21% over the previous five years. With over one third of all pipe-line products in active development are biopharmaceuticals, this segment is set to continue outperforming the total pharmaceutical market and could easily reach US$100 billion by the end of this decade.
This is a unique book that describes the most recent achievements in the methodology of protein biosynthesis under cell-free conditions. Various versions of cell-free protein-synthesizing systems and their applications to production of individual proteins on a preparative scale are reviewed. The most recent, advanced methodologies, such as continuous-exchange and continuous-flow cell-free systems and novel effecting batch-format cell-free procedures, are considered. Special attention is drawn to the possibilities of structural (NMR; X-ray) analysis of various gene expression products with the use of a new generation of cell-free systems.

'Teaching in context' has become an accepted, and often welcomed, way of teaching science in both primary and secondary schools. The conference organised by IPN and the University of York Science Education Group, Context-based science curricula, drew on the experience of over 40 science educators and 10 projects. The book is arranged in four parts. Part A consists of two papers, one on situated learning and the other on implementation of new curricula. Part B contains descriptions of five major curricula in different countries, why they were introduced, how they were developed and implemented and evaluation results. Part C gives descriptions of three projects that are of smaller scale and their materials are used as interventions in other more conventional curricula. There is also a contribution on some fundamental research where modules of work are written to examine how best to design context-based curricula. Finally, Part D consist of two chapters, one summarising some of the findings that came out of the chapters in the three earlier parts and the second looks at the future.
