The Sultanate was at the apex of a truly multi-ethnic society. Modernization not only brought market principles to the economy and more complex administrative controls as part of state power, but also new educational institutions as well as new ideologies. Thus new ideologies developed and nationalism emerged, which became a political reality when the Empire reached its end. This book compares the different intellectual atmospheres between the pre-republican and the republican periods and identifies the roots of republican authoritarianism in the intellectual heritage of the earlier period.

The Twelver Shia in Modern Times
This volume - grown out of an international conference at Freiburg University in 1999 - deals with various aspects of Shiite Islam since the 18th century. It is divided into two major parts, the first of which is dedicated to traditional institutions of theology and learning and their transformation in modern times. The second part treats internal debates and the activities of Shiite dissidents, showing that Shiism is far from being uniform. Ideological and political developments in the 20th century and especially the Islamic Revolution in Iran have shaped the image of modern Shiism more than any other tendencies and are therefore also discussed in greater detail in Parts three and four. The Return of Private Property
What makes private property valuable, desirable or workable? This book focuses on social and economic dimensions of private property after the agrarian reforms of 1996 in Azerbaijan. It looks at the kinds of land and cultivation strategies emerging in the decades after the fall of the Soviet Union and asks why rural households were often unwilling to cultivate the privatized land shares they received for free, despite the threat and existence of rural poverty. Consideration is given both to households which were engaging in cultivation and those which were not. This includes internally displaced persons who were formally excluded from the privatization process but were nevertheless successful and eager cultivators. How and why were they keen on using land? How far does private property thrive on its own, without the support of lucrative markets or without the implementation of state sponsored economic policies? Through the lens and insights provided by economic anthropology, this study chronicles the historical legacy of authoritarian state structures, as well as the contemporary micro- and macro-economic struggles that mark a politics of property after socialism.

Visions of Justice
Visions of Justice offers an exploration of legal consciousness among the Muslim communities of Central Asia from the end of the eighteenth century through the fall of the Russian Empire. Paolo Sartori surveys how colonialism affected the way in which Muslims formulated their convictions about entitlements and became exposed to different notions of morality. Situating his work within a range of debates about colonialism and law, legal pluralism, and subaltern subjectivity, Sartori puts the study of Central Asia on a broad, conceptually sophisticated, comparative footing. Drawing from a wealth of Arabic, Persian, Turkic and Russian sources, this book provides a thoughtful critique of method and considers some of the contrasting ways in which material from Central Asian archives may most usefully be read.
