This volume gives an overview of the recent representative developments in relativistic and non-relativistic quantum theory, which are related to the application of various mathematical notions of various symmetries. These notions are centered upon groups, algebras and their generalizations, and are applied in interaction with topology, differential geometry, functional analysis and related fields. The emphasis is on results in the following areas: foundation of quantum physics, quantization methods, nonlinear quantum mechanics, algebraic quantum field theory, gauge and string theories, discrete spaces, quantum groups and generalized symmetries.
The Wigner Symposium series is focussed on fundamental problems and new developments in physics and their experimental, theoretical and mathematical aspects. Particular emphasis is given to those topics which have developed from the work of Eugene P Wigner. The 2nd Wigner symposium is centered around notions of symmetry and geometry, the foundations of quantum mechanics, quantum optics and particle physics. Other fields like dynamical systems, neural networks and physics of information are also represented.This volume brings together 19 plenary lectures which survey latest developments and more than 130 contributed research reports.

The Eighth Rochester Conference on Coherence and Quantum Optics was held on the campus of the University of Rochester during the period June 13-16,2001. This volume contains the proceedings of the meeting. The meeting was preceded by an affiliated conference, the International Conference on Quantum Information, with some overlapping sessions on June 13. The proceedings of the affiliated conference will be published separately by the Optical Society of America. A few papers that were presented in common plenary sessions of the two conferences will be published in both proceedings volumes. The Wigner Symposia deal with the most recent developments in those mathematical areas which were introduced to physics by E P Wigner, and also with related fields. The central themes of the proceedings of the 5th Wigner Symposium (WigSym5) are quantum algebras and groups, group-theoretical developments, quantum field theory and geometry, and phase space formulations of quantum mechanics. The proceedings also contain papers on the application of these techniques in various branches of physics, and many contributions in which fundamental mathematical and epistemological questions related to the foundations of quantum theory are discussed.
Since 1972 the Schools on Nonlinear Physics in Gorky have been a meeting place for Soviet Scientists working in this field. Since 1989 the proceedings appear in English. They present a good cross section of nonlinear physics in the USSR. This third volume emerged from material presented at the 1989 School. It contains sections dealing with nonlinear problems in physics and astrophysics, quantum and solid state physics, dynamical chaos and self-organization.
