Este é um livro sobre o estudo da forma urbana em Portugal. A primeira parte da obra constitui uma análise genérica do campo de conhecimento da morfologia urbana e coloca em evidência as três perspetivas disciplinares mais relevantes no contexto português: histórica, geográfica e arquitetónica. A segunda parte centra-se num conjunto de abordagens morfológicas específicas, incluindo a análise sintática, os autómatos celulares e a modelação baseada nos agentes. Por fim, a terceira parte do livro explora as relações entre a análise morfológica e o desenho da cidade contemporânea.
Urban Morphology
This is a book about cities or, more precisely, about the physical form of cities. It starts presenting the main elements of urban form – streets, urban blocks, plots and buildings – structuring our cities and the fundamental actors and processes of transformation shaping these elements. It then applies this analytical framework to describe the evolution of cities over history as well as to explain the functioning of contemporary cities. After the initial focus on the ‘object’ (cities) the book describes how different researchers and different schools of thought have been dealing with this object since the emergence of Urban Morphology, as the science of urban form, in the turning to the twentieth century. Finally, the book tries to identify what are the most important (and specific) contributions that Urban Morphology has to offer to contemporary cities, societies and economies.

A presente obra corresponde ao comentário de um dos regimes com maior relevância no ordenamento jus urbanístico português - o Regime Jurídico dos Instrumentos de Gestão Territorial -, regime este que foi alvo de uma revisão recente operada pelo Decreto-Lei n.o 80/2015, de 14 de maio, em cumprimento do disposto no artigo 81.o da Lei de Bases Gerais da Política Pública de Solos, de Ordenamento do Território e de Urbanismo (Lei n.o 31/2014, de 30 de maio).
