General description of the collection: The William W. Bennett papers include a completed World War II Veterans Survey questionnaire describing his military service and post-war activities. Chiefly letters between Dudley Bennett and his parents, the majority written by his mother, Irene Bennett. The collection also relates to several generations of the extended Bennett, Atkins, Dowd, and Tuttle families. The letters of Irene Bennett provide a detailed account of life in Middletown during World War II. Letters to Dudley Bennett from other correspondents are arranged chronologically at the end of the correspondence series but those from his aunt Marion Tuttle (mother's sister) are archived separately because of their "cheek and charm". Letters from Dudley, less numerous than ones received, describe early training as a pilot and his disappointment at his eventual rejection from th...

Mastering the Flute with William Bennett

For the first time the exercises and teaching methods of world-renowned flutist William Bennett are featured in one workbook. After more than a decade of study with Bennett and many of his students, Roderick Seed has documented the tools that have made Bennett known for his ability to give the flute the depth, dignity, and grandeur of the voice or the stringed instrument. Topics range from how to overcome basic technical difficulties, such as pitch control, to the tools for phrasing, prosody, tone, and intonation needed for playing with different dynamics and ranges of expression. Advanced musicians will find useful exercises and techniques in this book that will deepen their knowledge and enjoyment of making music and help them in their quest to master the flute.

A Bed with a View

It began life as Peter Bennett's journal, a straight-forward account of his experiences as a patient on the ward of a typical NHS hospital in the course of several extended visits starting in 2018. It gradually morphed into something rather different. It became an ever more complex and interesting book; emerging as a vivid, unflinching, by turns painful, angry, moving and hilarious memoir of this time. This is a story filled with touching and comical memories and incidents. It gives unblinking insights into the reality of the NHS today, showing how it functions and sometimes fails to function. It is partly a state-of-the-nation piece but is also far more than this. It is something richer and more substantive, offering the reader a fragmentary autobiography, a colourful recollection of Peter’s life as a successful lawyer and failed comedian. And ultimately it is a guide of sorts for those coming of age today, and a source of wit and wisdom for anyone shrewd enough to seek out, or fortunate enough to stumble upon, this richly entertaining book. It is a deeply personal, accessible, moving and wise piece of work.

Robert W. Bennett's correspondence from August 15, 1861 through December 12, 1863, written to his father, mother and sisters, as well as two letters addressed to Bennett from his cousins Nicholas and William, along with one letter written to Bennett's father from another soldier in Company D. Correspondence consists of two identical sets of typed transcriptions (no originals). The bulk of the letters are addressed to Bennett's father and contain descriptions of camp life, Bennett's impressions of "Dixie," and his actions with the regiment. The letters to his mother are similar but much briefer, and those to his sisters Martha ("Mat") and Mary focus on home life. Among his tasks as a soldier,...
