Inflammatory Bowel Disease

One of the most vivid memories from my medical school training was seeing my first surgical operation on a patient with Crohn’s disease. The senior surgeon at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City, the same institution at which Burrill Crohn, Leon Ginzburg, and Gordon Oppenheimer had first described the disease “terminal ileitis,” had - doubtedly done countless operations on patients with inflammatory bowel disease in the past. Yet as we both gazed down into the patient’s open abdomen, at the “creeping fat” that seemed to be wrapping its sticky fingers around the young man’s intestines, he stated, “this is the m- tery of Crohn’s disease—no two patients are ever the same. ...

Text, Theology, and Trowel

Text, Theology, and Trowel consists of ten essays on the understanding and reception of the Hebrew Bible in Judaism and Christianity. Textual exegesis, historical contexts, and modern reception of the Hebrew text are placed side by side to encourage interdisciplinary study. Two theologically minded essays are included to help overcome the biblical studies/theology dichotomy. By placing such divergent approaches together, this volume will help expand ways of thinking about the Bible and its cognate fields.

Evidence-Based Gastroenterology provides a synthesis of evidence-based literature from the field of gastroenterology. Written by an international panel of world-renowned experts, it highlights the most important clinical issues currently facing gastroenterologists. The authors illustrate how they systematically assembled and critically assessed the evidence pertaining to a specific disease. They show how to apply that evidence to problem-solving in daily clinical practice. Supporting evidence is graded using a three-point scale and then further divided into five subcategories. This grading method enables the reader to rapidly identify the optimal approach for specific patient management. What sets Evidence-Based Gastroenterology apart from others in the field is that it allows the reader to see how evidence has been gathered and appraised and how it may be applied in the clinical setting. Evidence-Based Gastroenterology is an extremely valuable resource for those concerned with the pathogenesis, diagnosis, and treatment of a variety of disorders. It identifies important advances and serves as a guide for future research in gastroenterology.

Inflammatory Bowel Disease

The inflammatory bowel diseases, of unknown etiology and for which there are no cures, continue to attract the attention and interest of gastroenterologists, internists and surgeons. International symposia are common and it is safe to say that there is at least one major symposium held somewhere in the world each year. This book encompasses the proceedings of two recent symposia held in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. The symposia were the fifth and sixth international meetings focused on inflammatory bowel disease in Canada in the last eight years. Once again they were sponsored by Axcan Pharma, Inc. (formerly Interfalk Canada, Inc.) and endorsed by the Canadian Association of Gastroent...

Greeks Bearing Gifts

Using models from social anthropology as its basis, this book looks at the role of personal relationships in classical Greece and their bearing on interstate politics. It begins with a discussion of what friendship meant in the Greek world of the classical period, and then shows how the models for friendship in the private sphere were mirrored in the public sphere at both domestic and interstate level. As well as relations between Greeks (in particular those in Athens and Sparta), Dr Mitchell looks at Greek relations with those on the margins of the Greek world, particularly the state of Macedon, and with neighbouring non-Greeks such as the Thracians and the Persians. She finds that these other cultures did not always have the same understanding of what friendship was, and that this led to misunderstandings and difficulties in the relations between non-Greeks and Greeks.
