Oswald's Politics

Making sense of Lee Harvey Oswald's politics is not easy and has understandably resulted in quite varied interpretations. In the aftermath of the assassination, the immediate reaction of many who knew him or knew about him was that Oswald could never have shot the president for political reasons. Oswald's Politics traces the political thought and behaviour of the historical Lee Harvey Oswald before the events of November 22, 1963. It presents an alternative explanatory model of Oswald to the psycho-historical one used by the Warren Commission and argues that his ideas and actions resulted more from environmental and intellectual influences than attitudinal factors. It examines the impact the...

In a fictional BBC interview, George Orwell recounts the story of James Harrington, a seventeenth century advocate of democracy, who inspired him to write "1984". In this screenplay, Orwell sees Harrington as a civilized man in an uncivilized world, who used his wit and imagination to speak truth to power. Inspired by true events, it traces Harrington's meeting with the Pope in Rome in 1636; his attending to King Charles I when he was a prisoner at Holdenby House, and being on the scaffold when the King was beheaded; his friendship with Henry Neville; the meetings of Harrington's famous Rota Club in 1659, and his subsequent imprisonment after the Restoration. Harrington's belief that governm...

Lee Harvey Oswald as I Knew Him

“Let us hope that this book, poorly written and disjointed, but sincere, will help to clear up our relationship with our dear, dead friend Lee.” Thus concludes a largely forgotten manuscript appended to Volume XII of the House Select Committee on Assassinations. “Lee,” of course, was Lee Harvey Oswald, the man accused of having assassinated President John F. Kennedy in Dallas on November 22, 1963—and whose closest friend, many have argued, was Dallas resident George de Mohrenschildt. For years following Kennedy’s assassination there were rumors and assumptions—some started by de Mohrenschildt himself—that this colorful, larger-than-life European émigré possessed a key to un...

Canada has a rich and interesting military intelligence history, one that continues to grow at a rapidly expanding rate. Intelligence is a key element of operations, enabling commanders to successfully plan and conduct operations. It enables them to win decisive battles and it helps them to identify and attack high value targets. In order to ensure Commanders have the required support they need to plan and conduct operations, members of Canada's Military Intelligence Branch are serving in an increasingly dangerous number of hotspots around the world. In recent years they have served in Bosnia-Herzegovina, Haiti, Somalia, Rwanda, East Timor, and Afghanistan just to name a few. While Intelligence personnel have played a major role in ensuring the successful completion of these interdiction missions, many of their stories remain classified. This history cannot truly be complete until the Official Secrets Act permits a clearer picture to be told. Out of Darkness-Light, Volume 2 should, however, give the interested reader at least a partial view of some of the service that has been carried out on Canada's behalf by the Canadian Forces Intelligence Branch for the years 1983 to 1997.
