Educated at King's College, London, the naturalist and marine biologist William Saville-Kent (1845-1908) went on to work at the British Museum and in aquariums at Brighton, Manchester and Westminster. He spent many years in Australia as a fisheries expert, and during this time he made extensive surveys of the natural world. The present work, first published in 1897, was intended to give a non-scientific audience a glimpse of the fantastic array of wildlife in Australia. The author discusses the many varieties of birds, lizards, fish and other sea life, insects (an entire chapter is devoted to termites), and vegetation. He was also able to take advantage of the photographic technology of the time and include around fifty collotype images, which complement the many other illustrations of the plants and animals he writes about, providing a vivid overview of the natural world in late nineteenth-century Australia.

On a summer's morning in 1860, the Kent family awakes in their elegant Wiltshire home to a terrible discovery; their youngest son has been brutally murdered. When celebrated detective Jack Whicher is summoned from Scotland Yard he faces the unenviable task of identifying the killer when the grieving family are the suspects. The original Victorian whodunnit, the murder and its investigation provoked national hysteria at the thought of what might be festering behind the locked doors of respectable homes -- scheming servants, rebellious children, insanity, jealousy, loneliness and loathing.

Introduction to Chemical Reaction Engineering and Kinetics

Solving problems in chemical reaction engineering and kinetics is now easier than ever! As students read through this text, they'll find a comprehensive, introductory treatment of reactors for single-phase and multiphase systems that exposes them to a broad range of reactors and key design features. They'll gain valuable insight on reaction kinetics in relation to chemical reactor design. They will also utilize a special software package that helps them quickly solve systems of algebraic and differential equations, and perform parameter estimation, which gives them more time for analysis. Key Features Thorough coverage is provided on the relevant principles of kinetics in order to develop be...

Bringing together 17 works from private and public collections across the globe, this will be the first museum exhibition of Saville?s work ever to be held in Scotland, and only her third in the UK. The selection spans 26 years, from iconic early paintings such as Propped (1992) and Trace (1993-4), to recent charcoal and pastel drawings, demonstrating how Saville?s approach to depicting the human body has shifted over the course of her career. Other highlights will include a series of large-scale head paintings, such as Rosetta II (2005-6), made while the artist was based in Italy, and the premier of a major new work, Aleppo (2017-18), which is at the Scottish National Gallery alongside historic works from the collection.00Exhibition: Scottish National Gallery of Art, Edinburgh, UK (24.03.-16.09.2018).

"Born in Devon, England in 1845 William Saville-Kent grew up in an extraordinary situation. His childhood was tragically cut short by the conviction of his much loved sister for the murder of their infant half-brother. Moving to London he began a career in marine biology under the patronage of the lions of Victorian natural history --Owen, Huxley and Flower. His early professional years were spent in the Museum of the Royal College of Surgeons and the British Museum where he developed special interest in corals, sponges and marine protozoa. From 1884 to 1895 Saville-Kent introduced scientific research to Australian fisheries and laid the foundations for a distinctive Australian style of fisheries management ..."--Back cover.
