Educated at King's College, London, the naturalist and marine biologist William Saville-Kent (1845-1908) went on to work at the British Museum and in aquariums at Brighton, Manchester and Westminster. He spent many years in Australia as a fisheries expert, and during this time he made extensive surveys of the natural world. The present work, first published in 1897, was intended to give a non-scientific audience a glimpse of the fantastic array of wildlife in Australia. The author discusses the many varieties of birds, lizards, fish and other sea life, insects (an entire chapter is devoted to termites), and vegetation. He was also able to take advantage of the photographic technology of the time and include around fifty collotype images, which complement the many other illustrations of the plants and animals he writes about, providing a vivid overview of the natural world in late nineteenth-century Australia.

Bringing together 17 works from private and public collections across the globe, this will be the first museum exhibition of Saville?s work ever to be held in Scotland, and only her third in the UK. The selection spans 26 years, from iconic early paintings such as Propped (1992) and Trace (1993-4), to recent charcoal and pastel drawings, demonstrating how Saville?s approach to depicting the human body has shifted over the course of her career. "Born in Devon, England in 1845 William Saville-Kent grew up in an extraordinary situation. His childhood was tragically cut short by the conviction of his much loved sister for the murder of their infant half-brother. Moving to London he began a career in marine biology under the patronage of the lions of Victorian natural history --Owen, Huxley and Flower. His early professional years were spent in the Museum of the Royal College of Surgeons and the British Museum where he developed special interest in corals, sponges and marine protozoa.
