Watteau at the Wallace Collection

  • Categories: Art

One of the most famous and influential artists of the eighteenth century, Jean-Antoine Watteau (c. 1684-1721) fundamentally changed the course of French painting. With masterpieces such as Les charmes de la vie, Lady at her Toilet and Les Champs lis es, the Wallace Collection preserves one of the three outstanding collections of his paintings worldwide (together with Paris and Berlin) but it has never before been the subject of a special exhibition or a separate study. Continuing the series of monographs highlighting important works by masters in the Wallace Collection, this book discusses in depth all eight paintings by Watteau in the Collection and two of his lesser-known works at the Soane Museum and in York. Each of the paintings, which together span his entire career and represent many aspects of his work, will form the starting point for a chapter of the book. Among the topics discussed will be: Watteau and Theater, Watteau and the Art Market, The Artist at Work, Watteau - the Academician, The Erotic and the Indecent in Watteau's Work, and Watteau in London.

Jostling together we find royalty, a notorious serial killer, wealthy shipping magnates, pop stars, politicians, chancers, an inventor, courting couples and young kitchen staff. We are invited to investigate the mysteries of complementary medicine, suspicions of arson, the art of landscape design and public architecture, the fun of bathing huts and cocktail bars, and inspiring experiences only the seaside can bring.

Criticism in the Wilderness

Originally published in 1980, this now classic work of literary theory explores the wilderness of positions that grew out of the collision between Anglo-American practical criticism and Continental philosophic criticism. This second edition includes a new preface by the author as well as a foreword by Hayden White. ?A key text for understanding ?the fate of reading' in the Anglophone world over the last fifty years.”?Hayden White, from the Foreword ?Criticism in the Wilderness may be the best, most brilliant, most broadly useful book yet written by an American about the sudden swerve from the safety of established decorum toward bravely theoretical, mainly European forms of literary criticism.”?Terrence Des Pres, Nation ?A polemical survey that reaffirms the value of the Continental tradition of philosophical literary criticism.”?Notable Books of the Year, New York Times Book Review
